FSX & 2 HDDs

Postby SubZer0 » Thu Sep 04, 2008 10:59 pm

I just got another new 250GB 7200RPM HDD from a friend who isn't using it. The drive is completely empty and I just did a full reinstall of my operating system and have not installed FSX yet. How should I install FSX when I have two different hard drives? Both are exactly the same in specs.

Should I keep FSX itself in one drive and all the add-ons in the Windows drive?

Are there specific add-ons that need to be installed in the same drive as FSX itself?

Where should I install the SPs for FSX?

Etc...

Thanks!

I have all my addon planes & scenery installed on an external hdd and it works fine (though I don't know if it would improve performance if installed all on the same hdd)! The only thing that may happen: some addon planes refer to (mainly) the default 737 sounds; so I had to move the 737 to the external simobj.-folder, too...

i run a few HDDs. i run the OS on a main C drive. then have a gamming only drive. i then have other things like music drives and pics drive.

it all depends tho on your set up. with me, my faster rpm drives are gamming drives. for faster reads.

its also nice to keep them on diferent drive for crash reasons. if you need to reinstall an os, you wont loose all your information you have saved up.   just a thought, i hope it helps.

yes some things will happen when wipping the drive. but you only need to do a repair install. the nice thing is, you wont loose downloaded aircraft, or info from doing missions. i have been doing this for a few yrs with 2004, and simX. i find that it works better.

I read somewhere that Nick said it's best to leave the main FSX installation on its own drive, and all the add-ons on another seperate drive. He also said that UTX should be installed in the same drive as the main FSX installation. I'm just trying to clear this up before I install anything.

Thats right, he did.  I`m trying to find the best way to access it after reinstall. Not happy with the repair option though.

addons like FEX and GEX can be installed to the OS drive to keep the space free off the FSX drive.. those addons send textures to FSX when the interface is run (texture installs based on selections) so they do not need to be in the FSX installation

UTX should NEVER be installed anywhere but into FSX directly

Any addon that acts as a database of file like FEX and GEX can remain off the FSX drive to keep it tidy

the more fee space a drive has, typically, the better it performs due to simple geometry.

FSX always goes on the fastest drive... by itself,... NO Partitions!

defrag defrag defrag.... AFTER everything has been installed and set up, not before, and always reboot between defrag passes. Never run defrags back to back without a reboot

Nick, if you install FSX on the D:\ drive and the OS on the C:\ drive then later reinstall the OS (wipe the C:\ drive) how do you carry on using the FSX on the D:\ drive?  What is the best method if you only wish to wipe the main drive and not the flight sim.

My add-ons are the following:

FEX, GEXn, UTX, Active Sky X, FS Genesis X, and maybe a few unnamed lol

So the only add-on that should be installed in the FSX drive is UTX? Any others?

Thanks!

FSGenesis goes into FSX.  its mesh and should go right where it wants to install, same with landclass products. ASX does not need to go into the FSX drive
