What attitude does the trim indicator show...full nose up?.
When you try to manually trim, does the trim indicator respond, but then return to its previous position when you cease your manual input? (Note: Easier than the mouse, you can manually trim from the numpad; numlock/off then 7=nose down and 1=nose up.)
Any of the above might indicate that some other input is controlling the trim. Either AP-Alt hold or possibly an errant control assignment.

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.
