Black Aircraft Texture Blocks??

Postby grizzard » Thu Jul 10, 2008 6:23 pm

About 30% of the time when I select my favorite plane for a flight, about half of the aircraft is displayed in shiny black solid textures ... areas that are probably panels. It might be the cargo doors, the tail section, and perhaps the entire nose section. I also get on occasion excessively black textures in the VC mode, so dark that it's difficult to see the switches at all. Usually if I continue inside and past the 2D cockpit it will clear up and the dash will be normal. But, back to the initial Preview Window. Even after loading my aircraft, the display does not change in Free Flight. It does happen on occasion that if I load several different aircraft the problem goes away. I do NOT see it with the FSX default aircraft, just my Cheyenne. Ok ... the specs.

My system is in my signature and I have no other significant programs installed ... this is just for FSX. All parts are less than 2 months old.

I am running nHancer, UTX, and GEXn along with FSX.

The aircraft I fly the most is Digital Aviation's Twin Cheyenne.

What I have done:
1. Uninstalled, cleaned, and then installed Nvidia Driver 6.14.0011.7516
2. Checked my DirectX version ....   9.0c
3. Reinstalled vcredist_x86 (which seemed to help before)

What I have NOT done is probably the obvious and that is to reinstall the Piper Cheyenne  :'(   I've read where a few have gotten the message that's it's already installed when they try to re-install. So I guess I'm a little timid there hoping that someone else had the same problem and that there might be a solution. I did Google for an answer but did not get anything significant, just mostly older flight sim stuff.

As best I can recollect the problem problem started after I installed UTX or GEXn ..... but in the VC. I thought it might just be an anomaly and go away but it hasn't. But it could be anything .... it just started at about that time.

Any suggestions appreciated ...  :)

It sounds like the  UTX or GEXn you installed might be the problem it more than likely changed some default scenery or textures you can try to uninstall both or one at a time to see if the problem goes away. Or you can try using system restore to go back to before you installed the programs. If neither of these work about the only others options are to try to repair FSX or the dreaded uninstall reinstall :'( :-/
I hope you figure it out. 8-)

Gizzard

add this to the FSX.cfg file under the [SCENERY] entry

ShowMissingTextureAlert=1

if there is any texture missing FSX will tell you

If you dont get a missing texture warning then the problem is some type of issue with the draw calls or the aircraft texture are not made right for FSX

NickN,
Great .... now that narrows it down. I edited fsx.cfg and rebooted and then loaded FSX. 76 files with the message "Failed to load texture". I did a search and the first file that it said was missing .... was found by the search .... so at least that file is there and I suspect the rest as well.  I then shut down again, rebooted, reloaded and when FSX came up I got the same series of messages. Funny thing though ... both times I did not get a repeat of the "black panels" and the plane flew well.  So it appears the loading mechanism may not be damaged and not loading parts of the program and perhaps makes a recovery for the actual flight?  Or finds a substitute?  In any case it's looking more like a reinstall I'm thinking.

I appreciate your help ......  but time to go flying tonight anyway!!  ;D ;D  Tonight I'll put it in the hanger and call a mechanic in the morning!  8-)

Ok, just a follow up and closure (I hope).  My mechanic couldn't fix my airplane and I continued to have problems which seemed to migrate to my Dakota (which started just freezing) .... and a CTD.  So .... I started reinstalling ..  :(

1. First I uninstalled my Cheyenne, rebooted and reinstalled.
Problems did not go away so continued troubleshooting as follows:
2. Did a System File Check  "sfc /scannow"
3. Did a hd defrag
4. Reinstalled my Dakota
5. Uninstalled my Cheyenne again rebooted and reinstalled.
6. Reset my resolution to 1920 x 1200 @ 16 bit instead of 32 bit.
7. Played a Multisession with 2 other players for an hour.

So far ... so good. Runs smooth.  Time will tell.
