260 @ 6 knots means wind at 6 knots out of the west.

The nose of your aircraft is usually aligned with the top of your compass.  If your aircraft is pointed due north, "N", or "0" will be at the top of indicator, depending on the style of compass.  Some compasses are wheels that turn left or right.  Your aircraft is pointed in the direction displayed.  There are also fixed compasses that have a needle that points in the direction the aircraft is pointed.

As far as directions, "0" is north, 9 (90) is east, 18 (180) is south, 27 (270) is west.

So, in your example, 260@6 knots is wind just slightly south of due west at 6 knots.

If your aircraft is pointed due north, the wind will be coming from your left (west) at 6 knots.  Look at your compas card (the compass) and look for the winds diredtion compaired to where your aircraft is pointed.  If you are pointed due west, with wind at 270@10 knots, that means you are flying or taking off into a 10 knot head wind.

0-90 would cover the nort to east direction.  45 would be north east.

"0" is due North

'1' (10) is ten degrees east (to the right) of due north,

'9' (90) is headed due east, and so on.

So, if ATC tells you to take a heading of "90" they want you to head due east, so you would turn until the pointer (or orientation of the compass card) indicates you are heeading to "9" (90).

Take a look at a clock.  (A round one, not digital)  Imagine an airplane on the clock, with 12 at the nose, 6 on the tail, and 3 and 9 on the right and left wings.  One o clock would be just right of the nose and so on.

Needless to say, this does not work with digital clocks or watches.

Kind of like the old ATC joke.

ATC : "United 123 you have traffic at your 11 o'clock."
Pilot: "Can you give me another clue, my watch is digital."

Or the variation:

ATC:  Hulk 52, you have traffic at 11 o'clock.

Pilot:  11 o'clock?  It's only 9, and I ain't got time to hang around!
