FSX CTDs with Vista 64

Postby harryrupert » Tue Jul 01, 2008 10:41 pm

Hello everybody,
I have just taken delivery of my new system shown below which I was hoping was going to fly! with FSX. However it keeps crashing with just a fatal error message! I am running FSX Deluxe with Accl/Pack, clean install on the Raptor and Vista on the Seagate. It loads up ok but will then crash in sometimes 5 mins- 15 mins, the longest it has run is most likely about 25 mins. I have run it with and without FSUIPC4. I have uninstalled it reinstalled it defragged it and I'm pulling my hair out! Has anybody any suggestions please? I must be doing something crazy but can't think what! (My old P4 dell handled FSX better than this)
Thanks,
John

Hello,
I still haven't been able to found the problem, so am going to reformat the O/S drive, reinstall Vista Ultimate and carry out a clean install of FSX. I do hope that possibly the original Vista install was the problem.
The only other thing I can think of is the HD 3870 x2 ?

Try the OS and FSX on the same drive and see if their is any difference.  It could be that the SDK expects to be on the C:\ drive and so do other parts that interact with it.

I've got Vista 64 running on it's own drive and FSX on a drive by itself and have no problems.  You will get better performance with this configuration.   Make sure you have all of the latest drivers.  Sounds like a driver problem.  4.0 OC!  Are the temps reasonable?

Well,
I have just done a complete format end new install of FSX/Accl Pack
and within 5 minutes it CTD again! I restarted and as I was flying an error/solution came up on screen showing 2 problems 1) Intel chipset update which I have downloaded and installed and 2) ATI catalyst conflict recommending no solution other than downloading the newest version which I have now done. Regretfully its still crashing out!  Can I ask what graphics card you have on your system? as you are running Vista 64 on 1 drive and FSX on the other. I can only think its possibly that. BTW the temp on my processer is running at 26c to 28C which seems ok to me.
Thanks

What does the fatal error message say? Sometimes a missing texture in an aircraft folder will cause fsx to ctd as well.  Try running fsx without any add-ons (aircraft and scenery) at first and see if it makes a difference.

Hi, the message reads: "Microsoft Flight Simulator has stopped working" and then under: A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available - and a close program button. I have had other messages including Fatal Error. At this point I only have stock aircraft no-addons no addon scenery. just FSX Deluxe and acceleration pack which includes SP1/SP2. I;m still running FSX on my Dell 3.4 with XP pro and never have had this before. Must admit I am very frustrated! BTW I haven't touched the FSX.cfg file either. I really don't know what to do.

Thanks

Sounds like a video card issue, you may have to try an older driver, or a beta if ATI has them available.  Sorry I can't help much more than that, I have an nVidia 9800, so I am not up to date with ATI stuff.

Thanks for your input, I think so as well, are you running with Vista? if so I think I might change to Nvidia! I cannot think of anything else btw I have tried 3 driver sets so far including a beta which just crashed again.

Thanks

Hello everybody,

I'm still struggling with this problem.
Is anybody using a HD 3879 x2 with vista 64 successfully running FSX?
If so I would really appreciate their hardware setup please.

Thanks

If you haven't done so yet, you may want to check your memory timings and voltages.   ;)

Yes.. this sounds like a overclocking issue where things are set too high for hardware ability

Assuming you are running stock/default FSX and there are no addons installed this sounds very much like a driver or overclock problem

NEVER overclock a system while Windows is being installed.. overclocking os only done after all hardware/software is installed and you have confirmed stability

Thanks Nick for the info, should we remove the overclocking and see if FSX will run normally? The O/S system seems pretty stable so I thought it was the ATI drivers! I was just about to pull the card and change to Nividia, I will discuss this with my French friend tomorrow and ask him to disable the overclocking(which he did prior to loading the O/S. This is his and mine 1st try at o/c so I cannot blame him in anyway. I really do appreciate your guidance.

Many thanks
