Sonic Boom

FSX including FSX Steam version.

If you installed it correctly.  I couldn't locate it in my zip archive, so I'm downloading it again.  There may have been some effects sound or gauge files that may have had to have been loaded in the main FSX folders...

In the mean time, what does the .cfg for the XB-70 and FA-18 look like as far as the [smokesystem]?  (no need to post the whole .cfg file, just the smokesystem section)

If you F-18 is the "Warhawks" download, it has it too.  It's in the [lights] section if the cfg:

[LIGHTS]
//Types: 1=beacon, 2=strobe, 3=navigation, 4=cockpit
light.0=4,  14.950, 0.000, 2.619, fx_vclight
light.1=1, -18.330,  -6.034, 7.731, fx_beaconb
light.2=1, -18.330,   6.034, 7.731, fx_beaconb
light.3=2, -22.208, -6.146, 8.095, fx_strobe
light.4=2, -22.208,  6.146, 8.095, fx_strobe
light.5=10, -10.0,  0.0,  0.0, fx_RCB_machenvlop,1    // SonicBoom effect
light.6=8, 13.5, 0, 0, fx_vapor_fa18
light.7=7, -13.00, 22.0, -1.00, //fx_contrail_s_short                     //Invalid part for FSX.
light.8=7, -13.00, -22.0, -1.00, //fx_contrail_s_short                    //Invalid part for FSX.
light.9=5, -22.8, -1.65, -0.8, fx_flame2_mid
light.10=5, -22.8,1.65, -0.8, fx_flame2_mid
light.11=9, -23.0, -1.65, -0.8, fx_augmentor2
light.12=9, -23.0, 1.65, -0.8, fx_augmentor2

//light.13=5, -22.8, -1.65, -0.8, fx_shinkirou.fx
//light.14=5, -22.8,1.65, -0.8, fx_shinkirou.fx

//light.11=9, -23.0, -1.65, -0.8, fx_augmentor2
//light.12=9, -23.0, 1.65, -0.8, fx_augmentor2

Though, I can only get the F-18 to break mach by going up to about 10,000 and going into a dive. :P

The Tomcat has Effects folder with files that need to be added to the FSX "effects" main folder (The contents of the download folder, not the folder itself) and a gauge folder also.

I'd have to look at the XB-70 and see how that effect would work on it.  THe XB-70 is fairly large.

Your Hornet and Tomcat .cfg's should look almost the same, if your Hornet is the "Warhawks" download.

Try this: http://www.simviation.com/fs2004misc16.htm (look for "FS2004 CarrierOps Full Pack")

Rob Barendregt's gauge for the sonic boom is included. It's been awhile since I've worked with it, but recall there being several components that need installing. One being the sound files, which go into the main Sound folder in FS. Another being the effect file, which draws the sonic cloud, and goes into the main Effects folder. Last of all, the control gauge (rcb_miljet) goes into the main Gauges folder. Also, as mentioned above, an entry has to be made within the [lights] section in the aircraft.cfg that you wish to add the boom to.  The boom does produce sound in any view which is not correct, but sounds cannot be modified to appear in select views only - this doesn't detract from it's impact however. As an extra bonus, it works absolutely fine in FSX!

At sea level, Mach 1 is about 1200 KMPH, or 344 metres per second.

But at higher altitudes, where the temperature falls, the mach speed falls as well.

If a plane breaks Mach 1, there will always, ALWAYS be a boom.

Scientists are working to prevent that of course...

The sonic boom FX from Rob's military package I made and it does not work quite right in FSX

Although they will work, FX made for FS9 can show timing/visual issues in FSX and do not display the same as they will in FS9

If you want it to work, you have to learn, and once you learn how to edit the .cfg, it's almost second nature to add effects and new textures(Before I got into FS9 and FSX, *anything* that had instructions that said "edit .cfg..." was grounds to *run away very fast!*)

But since I wanted to add new aircraft, textures, and effects to FSX, I got over it. There's nothing to it.

But there is no editing involved with the F-14d or F/A-18 "Warhawks" aircraft.

All the variants in the download have the effect, since they all run off the same .cfg.  Anyway:

Okay, lets start with the F-14D.  Starting from when you downloaded and un-zipped the zip folder, what did you do?

Did you copy-paste the contents of the "effects" folder of the download into the FSX/effects folder?

Did you copy-paste the contents of the Gauge" folder into the FSX/gauge folder?

Obviously, you copy-pasted the contents of the "aircraft" (F-14D) into simobjects/aircraft, otherwise you would not have an F-14D to fly.

Also, there was an "Addon Scenery" folder, but that's not important, it's arresting cables, and a "fsuipc4" folder, that is also not important to the function of the "boom".

If you did the above, tehre should be no reason for the effect to not work.

If nothing else, and you've saved your original zip download, delete the f-14D from your simobject/airplanes, and unzip and re-install it again.

If you haven't saved your original download zip, download it again and do the same as above, delete the aircraft from your FSX, and reinstall.  Reinstall *contents* of the effects and gauge effects folders too.  In this case, I'd over-write when prompted if you want to over-write or replace the existing files.

There should be no reason to edit any .cfg files.

That is why I am suggestiong you delete it and reinstall it again, step by step, because if it's not working, then something is not right with the installation.
