Any Old Advice Won't Do!

Postby Plugpennyshadow » Mon Jun 23, 2008 8:24 pm

I'm as serious as a truck in your rear-view with no brakes!  I'm gonna take the plunge!

I AM GONNA GO VISTA ULTIMATE!

There!  I that's my story and I'm stick'n to it!

My Specs:
Intel Core2 Duo #6750@2.66Ghz  -  Intend to upgrade to a quad on this board round Christmas.
(Stock cooler.  No overclock as yet so runs plenty cool.)

ASUS P5K-E Mobo  (Been nice and slick so far.)

Corasair Dominator 4GB 240-Pin DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) somewhere in the wind from Newegg as I type.
(Recommended for a similar board to another member by NickN in the hardware section.)

Antec 750w PSU with all the bells and whistles.
(Love the built in SATA and GPU power plugs.)

Coolmaster case w/2 120mm Fans in side and rear, 1 80mm Fan in front bezel.  (System runs nice and quiet and above all, cool.)

2 150gig WD Raptors.  1 w/OS.  The other loaded with FS9 & FSX.  Very little fragmentation.  Works for me.
1 500gig WD IDE drive partitioned three ways to image the two Raptors and provide onboard storage of music, movies and the like.

Onboard Sound

Bios is up to date and have collected all the driver and software updates I could download to external storage drive.  Ready to dive into loading Vista Ultimate.  (I traded a 20g. shotgun that I no longer wanted.  Gent in neighborhood bought Vista Ultimate w/SP1 and didn't know it wouldn't run for boogers on his P3 machine...Open box and all that...I have no shame what-so-ever!)

Question?
Is there a tweak similar to Nick's XP/FSX tweak sticky that can pin back the memory over-usage in Vista?

I have familiarized myself with ways to get the Nag out of Vista by turning off some of the ARE YOU SUREs and YOU NEED ADMINISTRATORs type stuff.
Beleive I know how to turn off programs running in backround as well.  Seems to be similar to XP when you know where to look.

I will close this to say that I just love the utility and function of my new laptop loaded with Vista Ultimate.  Broke the wife's heart Friday night last when I told her the XP/FSX tweak only worked for XP. 8-)  Had to reload both our machines after she dove into them tinkering.  No harm done ::)

I would like this to perhaps be a detailed, step-by-step, holding my hand the whole way, if at all possible.  Really want to get this system right and optimized as far as possible.  And if this thread could serve to help other...That what this is all about!

Vista was pretty much plug and go, for me. I had some driver issues at first, because  I chose 64-bit.. but they've all been resolved.

Vista is a bloated beast compared to XP.. but so was XP compared to 98..

You'll find this a painless transition, not to worry  ;) .. and sound like you're well enough versed to be sharing YOUR tips when the dust settles..  :)

OOPS!

I forgot to mention that I see the XP/FSX tweak can be used on Vista but that it is a UAOR (Use At Own Risk).

Question?
What differences, if any, are there between using Nick's tweak on Vista and what potential problems could arise?

Again, I am not looking for perfection.  Just well thought out advice, perhaps backed up by experience with this particular hardware or similar.

I am going to bed soon.  Have 1000miles to plow next two days.  I'll check back Wednesday night.  Thanks in advance for all your help.

And I wish to say I am not just mooching or trying to pick free from the knowledge tree.  I'm known in our church and at work as the computer guy.  Always giving advice and helping folks.  I know how doctors feel when they must tell a family someone has died.  "I'm so sorry, but your Gateway is gone.  There is no hope."  Some people react much the same way as the loss of a family member...or a beloved pet.  And we won't talk about the reactions of those who don't have a backup plan...Can you say "Suicide Watch"?

What I know is limited but I dispense it freely.  So bring on the advice!  I'll spread it around my circle...Sharing the love!

Da Bad Penny will knuckle off to bed now...Drag Drag Drag...
