WEIRD textures!

Postby SubZer0 » Sun Jun 08, 2008 8:02 pm

I'm doing the Missing Coworker mission and about an hour and a half into the mission this started to happen with the autogen and plane textures.

Maybe the video card is overheating? It's never been overclocked and it's running on stock air cooling. I've had it for about two years.

Or maybe it's just getting too old and needs to be replaced?

Any ideas?

Thanks for any help.

It's probably overheating. Did you use RivaTuner to turn up the fan speed?

I had the problem with my 6150SE obviously. So try underclocking maybe?

No, I'm not using anything to control fan speed or anything of that sort, everything is running stock as it should be.. up until now, that is

BTW, what is your video card?

7950GT 512MB

Get RivaTuner and crank your fan up if you're keeping it OC'ed.

Try cleaning it.

In one of the few times I post here on trouble-shooting, this issue is an odd one.

Whenever I fly over a rainforest, a seriously dense one, whenever my view turns to point at an area not previously seen, the autogen goes stretchy, flies up, then quickly returns to regular ground position.

My graphics card was fine, I could put my finger on the heatsink and it felt fine (my PC is currently an open case, so I can touch anything inside).

The issues is a software thing, to do with the autogen placement, since instancing is used.  You could possibly be having issues due to the sheer amount onscreen, so try turning down your autogen settings to see if it helps.

Only other thing I can see the issue being is a terrain problem, where, perhaps, autogen data is being misplaced so their XY positions are correct, but their Z positions are elevated by a certain amount.

To get what I mean, fly above the autogen, and if it still takes the shape of the terrain in height placement, it's almost certainly a software issue.

That's like what I mean, the autogen is raised up, but the height of each tree in relation to each other tree is the same, so it's like the trees are outlining an offset terrain mesh.

You can get this from bufferpools being too high

On a 512 card they should never be set much higher than 15000000 (15MB) and even that is pushing it

Baring that, overheat, overclocked too high or drivers

I'm not running BUFFERPOOLS at all; they don't seem to do much for my system in terms of smoothness. When I do, however, I always had it at 5-7000000

I've never OC'ed this card before

I have had this card for 2 years and have only cleaned it like once, so I will try cleaning it and see if this occurs any more

Thank you guys for all your help  :)

Its typically an OOM error on the system or VC, usually the VC when you see this and if memory is in line then it can be a hardware failure of the core or memory on the VC

BTW, be VERY VERY careful with Riva Tuner.. you can easily set the fan speed to one level and RT will revert it back to idle during heavy load use and damage a core

RT should not be used unless you know exactly what you are doing

I guess I won't mess with that. Thanks for the heads up, Nick!

I think this problem is an SP2 issue.  When I had SP1 installed I never encountered the problem.  Ever since I installed Acceleration/SP2 I started encountering the problem.
