when im coming into the landing they will tell me a final heading of like 290 and the heading of the airport is like 310

Do you mean the runway heading is 310, or the heading from your position to the airport is 310?

Does the airport have two runways? 29 & 31?

Who gave you the heading for Runway 31, you (in pr-flight planning) or the tower as you made your approach?

How far out from the airport were you when the change of heading was given?

All of the above questions aside, it's worth noting that FS ATC isn't the best & can quite often have you going all over the place, sometimes I'll just ignore ATC if it goes a bit mental.

Great landing in the pictures BTW, looked fine.

This is where an understanding of what's happening is important. You're still way ahead of yourself, flying instrument approaches in jets before knowing HOW to fly an instrument approach.

The last heading given to you by ATC on an instrument approach, is to intercept the localizer/glideslope. Then, it's up to you to turn runway heading at the proper time. Once you're established on the ILS, it's just a matter of keeping the needles centered until you either see the runway, or reach decision height and execute a missed approach.

You're running FSX, so it would be possible for us to do a shared cockpit in multi-player. If you're willing to park the jets and learn this stuff properly.. I'd be happy to take you on a complete instrument flight.. approach plate on your lap and all  :)

Like they will say there on the final turn to a heading of 290 and i do so and wait while im looking at the runway and its not turning to the runway

:D :) :D

I finally got the ILS down. The problem was I forgot to press the approach hold switch button but I did another flight and got it down. Check out my photos. :D

Thanks so much guys :)

Looking good in the pictures, glad to hear it's all falling into place. Feels pretty good when it all comes together doesn't it, now you need to practice a little bit more, then try it when the airport is fogged out - it's awsome when the runway suddenly appears where you thought it should be.

Yeah its alot easyier and funner becuase i dont have to do alot of stress about the airplane. Ive learned so much from this website :D. Once i get it down perfectly about every flight then I can do any weather conditions then ill have to learn the crosswinds haha  :o

Does anyone know why on some aircrafts that you download when you taxi out to the runway it seems to just swerve to the left? I try and keep it steady but I keep having to jerk it to the the right then try and keep it straight. Does anyone know why this happens? :-?

Torque, & P-factor caused by the prop.

You can go into the realism settings and turn them down...

OK - since we are talking ILS - I might as well present one problem I am having.

Let me just say, that I understand the concept of an ILS approach - I have done several; manually.

But what I CAN'T do, with a high succes rate, is automated!

I managed to make one landing last night in the default 747 - I intercepted the glideslope from underneath, before hitting APP.

I tried the same thing again - the 747 "porpoises" and flies all over the show. Despite already being lined up with the runway, it banks, and as I said, it climbs and descends erratically.

Is it just the default autopilot that messes my approaches up?

(also, my 747 keeps leveling itself in bank! AP or no AP!)

Always allow the autopilot to intercept the localiser at or bellow a 30 degree angle, AND, always capture glide slope from bellow it. Hit the APPR button BEFORE you start lining up. I would think erratic speed changes would cause this too.

In real life autopilots have a tendancy to chase the localiser and the glideslope if you don't intercept them properly.

And why fly on autopilot? :P. You can always watch people landing on youtube as it's like flying on autopilot - you're not in control. :)

This kinda high-lights the point that even IF you're going to let the autopilot fly the approach; you the pilot, have to know what's going on, and set the approach up as though you had no autopilot.

An erratic approach flown by the autopilot can be caused by any one (or combination) of these problems:

- too high
- too low
- too fast
- too slow
- too much of an intercept angle
- improper landing configuration
