Where to Insert aircraft

Postby Bubblehead » Mon Nov 13, 2006 11:35 pm

When I load an FS9 aircraft in FSX, do I insert it in the "FS9aircraft" folder or in the SimObject\airplane folder? I tried loading it in the FS9aircraft folder per instruction but the aircraft did not appear in the FSX Selection but when I inserted it in the SimObject\airplane, it worked. What gives?

..mm....if you have a folder called FS9aircraft in your FSX Simobjects folder you will have to make sure there is an entry in the fsx.cfg [main] section like this...

........    SimObjectPaths.x=SimObjects\FS9aircraft  the x being the next number in sequence and the name matching EXACTLY the name of the folder..any name will do so long as they are both the same. Then any aircraft in that folder will be selectable. Using the airplane folder will work fine unless you just want to keep them separate...........hope this helps as I am not totally sure it's what you are looking to do............commoner ;)

This keeps cropping up so let me try to explain. The default location to install your aircraft is the Flight Simulator X\SimObjects\airplanes folder. You can install them all there if you wish. This is exactly the same as installing aircraft to the Aircraft folder in FS9 or previous versions of FS.

However, with FSX it's possible to create as many locations for your addon aircraft as you like anywhere you like & with whatever folder name you like PROVIDING you edit FSX.cfg to recognise them. (I have't tried it but these folders don't even need to be in the FSX root directory. They should work from any location on your PC providing you add the exact path to them in fsx.cfg.) Look on these as different hangars to keep your addons separate for your own convenience. For example, I could have hangars in the FSX root directory folder named Aircraft, FS9 Aircraft, AI Aircraft etc. etc. The appropriate CFG entries would be:

SimObjectPaths.x=Aircraft
SimObjectPaths.x=FS9 Aircraft
SimObjectPaths.x=AI Aircraft

Note that the x in the SimObjectPaths.x entry must be the next number in sequence. This will obviously depend on how many new entries you add.

PS.

.....mmm...not sure why one would want aircraft littered all around ones HDD but yes it would be ok to do that. I have tried the method I gave which is the same really, except that it keeps them separate but at the same time together in the Simobjects folder and it works fine...........commoner. ;)

My point is that it's a matter of choice & not compulsory. The easiest & least confusing method would be to install all aircraft to the default location - the SimObjects\airplanes folder.

...Yes Hagar I do see  your point and I do agree that the best place would be the airplanes folder, so much simpler........mmm.....BTW.. I just changed that folder (and the fsx.cfg ref.) to aeroplanes...much nicer don't you think?...............commoner ;D ;)

I think you're getting confused. You shouldn't need to edit fsx.cfg to install aircraft. See if this tute helps. http://www.simviation.com/fsxaircraftinstall.htm
