FSX..........Windows XP or Vista???

Postby BuzzDatAzz » Sat Apr 05, 2008 10:38 pm

Hello all, I have hit another uncertainty. Ok here is my rig specs:

Core 2 Duo e6550 2.33 1333 FSB
4gb Adata 800mhz ram
nVidia GTS 8800 320mb ram

Now the dilema is, I have a dual boot system XP and Vista, should I use XP (which only sees 3 gigs of ram) or Vista (which can utilize full 4gigs of ram)

Currently I have FSX installed on XP because I have noticed that it runs faster on XP but I only had 2gigs of ram and a 1.8 core 2 duo. Now that I have upgraded I was wondering should I install on vista partition since I have more RAM and a faster processor.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.

XP or vista will use ALL 4GB of ram even without being x64

you must add the boot.ini line for Xp or the cache edit for vista and both will use ALL 4GB

x64 OS will use more than 4 and need no edits

I don't know if it was in my head or not, but I seemed to get better performance in FSX under Vista on  my old laptop.  I was running a Pentium 4 w/ hyperthreading @3Ghz, 1.5 GB of slow laptop RAM and had an ATI X300 mobile GPU in it.  I used a Dual Boot XP/Vista setup, and it seemed to run smoother under vista.  Framerates were about the same, but the stuttering was less apparent in vista.

Vista works best for me. I have a AMD Athlon X2 Dual-Core, Vista Home Premuim, and a nVidia Geforce 6150 SE and it still runs smooth.
