Help with recorder in fsx

I have been searching for a couple days and have yet to find an answer for my problem.
I am trying to get more than 2 aircraft in recorder
here is what I am doing
I start my flight and set recorder to record my first flight
after flying my first pattern I stop recorder and save the first file
I then reset the flight and set recorder to play as traffic the first flight
now i have my original flight as AI plus my user controlled aircraft
I now set recorder to record AI traffic and start recording my second flight.
When I go back into recorder to try to add a third aircraft I only get my original flight. the second does not show up.
What am I doing wrong, Any help or a step by step would be most appreciated. I so wanted to add a slew of navy jets on the carrier for my shot in this months screenshot contest but could not get more than 2 aircraft in the picture.

I do not remember precisely, but here is how I did I think:

When you start your second flight, don't record the AI traffic. Just record it as it is. Complete your flight following the AI yourself, then save it.
Return to your starting point, and play both flights as AI, it will work. You will see the two other "yourself" appearing.
