Blurries are driving me insane! Help please!!

Postby Artie » Sat Mar 01, 2008 12:28 am

First, let me say that I really like the forums here.  I've been lurking for a while and find them very useful.

I've been a long time FS fan going back to the mid 80's.  I've always looked forward to each new release, and have almost always been pleased with only a few exceptions.  Unfortunately, FSX is one of them.

When FSX came out, I had purchased what was then a near state of the art computer to run it on - an amd 5000x2  or something, an x1800xl vid card, and 2 GB memory.  Reasonably fast for its time.  When I first ran FSX, I was really impressed - they had fixed the dreaded blurries!!!  Or so I thought.  As long as I stuck with the ultralight, and didn't go near major airports, etc, etc, the graphics were astounding.  And it was a lot smoother, with the exception of stuttering once in a while.  No big deal I thought, I could probably tweak to get rid of them or the "patch" would fix that.  Worse case scenario is that I would have to upgrade again and all would be well.

Well, the patch came and while it fixed the stutters, the blurries were a problem again as you all know.  So, I figure OK, I'll just tweak it out or upgrade.  So I tweaked, and I tweaked, and I tweaked.  Nothing, nada, zilch.  So on to plan B - I upgraded.  Now I have a E6750 C2D, a gigabyte p35 mobo, 4 GB ram, at first using the old x1800xl, and now an xfx 8800gts512.

Tell me if I am expecting too much here, but I really think that this equipment should have no problem with the blurries, given my out of the box experience starting out with a lesser system.  With the new system, I have been trying everything I can think of to make this work.  Again, nothing, nada, zilch.  I have gone to the extreme of setting everything to minimal, and then bumping only those sliders which affect the actual textures and mesh, along with every variation of filtering and AA.  And guess what?  Yep, I still have the blurries!!  Nothing works.  I also have tried NickN's recommendations and am also using nHancer, to no avail.

I've read everything I can get my hands on to try and sort through this, and nothing seems to help.  I don't think there is a problem with my computer - it runs Crysis beautifully at max settings using DX9 and Windows MC.  ( I had some initial issues with both Crysis and FSX crashing due to a failure of the mobo to accurately set the ram timings on auto, but now they have been manually set and the computer is solid and stable as a rock.)  Crysis is gorgeous graphics-wise and a hell of a fun game to play to boot.  Those guys know how to program!!  Maybe MS could hire them for FSXI.

Anyhow,  I am absolutely frustrated, and feel that MS rushed out a product that was not really ready for prime time.  (What else is new right?)  OTOH, maybe I have overlooked something, though it is unlikely.  But I am willing to listen to any suggestions.

If anyone has any ideas after reading this I would be most grateful if you could share them.

Thanks a bunch for listening, and thanks in advance.

My Q6600, stock, can allow 500 knots of Seattle with autogen on Very Dense with no blurries.

Thanks for the replies guys.

Alrot, this last round of tweaks is when I decided to move everything to the left and start from scratch.  Then I went about setting the texture and mesh related sliders to the right.  I figured if nothing else was adding stress to the system, surely I would not see any blurries.  Of course, that didn't work.  So then I went and tweaked a few of the most popular fsx.cfg file settings, after resetting it for a clean slate..  No help there either.

I have Corsair memory - ddr2 1066 and it gets high marks in everest.   Everest also reports that my cpu seems to be functioning as expected as well.

Just did a defrag the other night, running it about 4 times.   It is on its own drive.

Drivers are all up to date also.

Maybe I should post a few pictures?

Let me try running fsx on two cores only....

Got blurries above 250 knots.

VB, this is stock FSX with no addons..  Blurries are below 100Knots, let alone 200 or 250, with an ultralight or a Cessna.  Of course I have the same issues wth the lear or heavies as well.

None of it makes any sense.  My next approach may be just to wipe it clean and see what happens with just the RTM version.

As far as settings, as I mentioned I have setup nhancer as Nick suggested, and tried with the default fsx.cfg.  What is interesting is that it starts out with automatically setting things at high or very high, and a perfbucket setting of 6.

This is crazy.  Any other ideas?

thanks

Daub, I get this even with a newly auto-generated fsx.cfg file.  Like I mentioned, I started from scratch with all sliders left and all checkboxes unticked, and then upped the texture and mesh to where they should be for crisp graphics.  I figured that with all the resource hogs of the program eliminated, that should be no problem whatsoever for my machine and I would establish a nice baseline from which to work with.

Thanks for the input though.

I am posting my fsx.cfg file to see if maybe someone else can spot something I may be missing here.

I set my target fram rate to unlimited, just to get a sense of the changes between the settings.  At the settings here, I am getting around 120 FPS average.  The computer is no slouch.  Unfortunately, it's mostly 120 FPS of blur.

All input is welcome.  Thanks

Busy doing other things?  Like tending to a minimally configured FSX? Please, I have a 20+ year history with computers, and I think I have a reasonably good idea of what is going on.

(I have implemented all of your suggestions except for O&O defragging, BTW- thanks Nick!)

Anyhow, I am always open to productive criticism and enlightenment.

I did post my profiles if you wouldn't mind taking a look.  I would more than welcome your suggestions.

Thanks
