This is the EXACT reason why I posted warnings about using a cheap-o RAID card,

However two serious questions:

-SNIP-
2.  Gypsy Baron's approach interests me.  I fly only in Aus/NZ, Europe and North America.  Maybe an A330 flight to Singapore from Melbourne, or a 747 Brisbane, Singapore, London.  I would like to know if it was possible to turn 'continents' on and off, depending on the task.  You make it sound simple but how did you go about it?

What I'm doing is sort of a kludge in that I created a number of folders
inside the folder where the "scenery.cfg" file lives.
On my XP system  that is "Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Microsoft\FSX".

I name the folders by areas that I fly....CFG_USA, CFG_HAWAII, CFG_EUROPE, CFG_ALL, etc...
I then fire up FSX and go to the Scenery Library menu and check or uncheck the various
scenery folders in the list until I have a configuration for a particular region.

I then click "OK" and let FSX build the new scenery.cfg file.
I then copy that file to the approriate sub-folder for that configuration.
I repeat that process untill I have all the unique scenery configurations
generated and saved.

From then on, before I fire up FSX, I click on a desktop shortcut to get
me to the scenery.cfg folder and I then copy the desired scenery.cfg into
the main folder, overwriting what's there.
Upon loadingFSX it will create a new database from that customized
scenery.cfg file.

One could no doubt write a few batch files to be execured to "automate'
the scenery.cfg file copying process to make it quicker to switch
between files but I've not taken it to that level yet.
It would be nice if there were a 'switch' that you could add to the
fsx.exe command to load a particular scenery.cfg file, alas, there
is not. I think there is a switch for the fsx.cfg file.

Anyhow, this kludge method is a bit quicker than having to uncheck\check
all the individual scenery files in the Scenery Library menu when you
want to 'slim down' your file structure.

I have alot of files in my Addon Scenery and Addon Scenery 2 folders
since I do not like to co-mingle scenery and textures from multiple
airports or regions in common scnery and texture folders.
I also place any 'region specific' traffic BGL's in the same folder as the
main scenery for the region so that when I disable that region I also
remove the AI traffic.

Thanks for all the help.  I do have Europe and Canada UTX and I fly almost exclusively in the US.  I'll see what deactivating that does.  I also use O&O regularly and especially after a large install/uninstall, and my 150G Raptor is almost exactly 50% full.

UTX works fine.. leave those entries and files alone and change features on/off from within the UTX configuration tool..

I really do think you are seeing normal FSX disk access and nothing more

What Paul is doing is experimenting with sectors to see if he can reduce file access by disabling 3rd party scenery sectors not being flown to identify a file access issue. (I think) That requires knowing what you are doing.
