Defrag problem

Postby diga » Sun Jan 06, 2008 1:08 am

I used Auslogics free defrag program to defrag my HD and now when I run FSX and when I am in the Outside view mode, the HD make a click sound and the screen freeze and start to run again. This happens very often and is this a problem or normal.

I would suggest finding another defrag program. I just had a look at this Auslogic one and I would rate it as very poor. There is no customisation and it didn't analyze my disc correctly. I would suggest running a windows defrag at least to make sure things are right and see how you go. If you want some good defrag software, go for O&O Defrag.

Or Disktrix UltimateDefrag which I think is pretty cool too, allowing you to set programs on the outer rings for maximum performance...

Hi All,

Thanks for the replies and I think it is better to use O&O Defrag as recommended by Nick.
I already un-installed Auslogics defrag.

Yes and if you are on XP try to use version 8.5 instead of 10. I posted a link to O&O 8.5 in the FAQ thread. It works better than 10 for XP. Follow my directions in the tweak thread about O&O and Windows setup to use v8.5

Unfortunately Vista requires version 10 so do not ever run -any- space defrags after the first 2 space defrag passes as I posted in my instructions

I have been using the Auslogics registry defrag, is that bunk too?

registry defrags are no longer needed since MS made changes in SP2 of XP and Vista. They both handle the registry quite well now.
I would not use any reg cleaner or defragger

OK, that's history.  Now what about CCleaner.  I use that a lot.

The only things that need to be cleaned on a system are programs you do not use or need (uninstalled correctly), clean out the folders I listed in the tweak thread, make sure the startup system and boot processes are not loaded with junk, ....

I use NOD32 and spybot and free version of adaware.  Nothing else.  I use windows firewall but not defender.

So should I start from here and do the boot file setup procedure you outlined?  No more Crap Cleaner?

If you are on WindowsXP, this is the list (2 posts) to follow, to the letter: http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2 ... 028653/0#5

and these too http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2 ... 2347/33#33

except for O&O defrag if you are on version 10. I posted a link to version 8.5 in the FAQ thread (3rd post) which does much better than 10 and you can follow my list about O&O use exactly if you use v8.5. Otherwise only run the Complete\Name defrag 3 times in a row with reboots between each pass with V10

The maintenance is outlined in the 2nd post of the first link and SKIP the use of registry mechanic. Its not needed anymore.

Done.  Now there are only 2 files in my prefetch folder, there were around 50 before.  No more Auslogics or CCleaner.

I have to use O&O version 10 as that is what I purchased.  I only used space when I installed all my FSX and since then only complete/name.  I can run Complete/name as often as needed, right?
