Blurries after switching to tower view

Postby ThePilot_Ace » Sun Dec 16, 2007 11:34 am

Well, the title sums it up basically. I have FSX with Acceleration installed (yes clean install etc). And I don't use any photographic scenery atm. When I switch from the VC to tower view and leave it on that view for a few seconds, and then switch back to VC, the ground textures go all blurry and take some seconds to reload. How do I prevent this?

thanks.

Aye,

mostly it happens if you are in greater distance and a hill is placed between you and the tower.
It's not ACC's fault.
Prevention?

So everyone gets this and we have to live with it?

No, I don't get this at all. First we ask have you defragmented using a proper tool (preferably O&O) If not go get O&O http://www.oo-software.com/home/en/products/oodefrag/ (the trial will be just fine) and and run a space defrag. No the Windows one is not nearly good enough, I would even settle for the norton one. Secondly we ask what are your graphics settings? And lastly are all your drivers for all your hardware up to date?

Personally I have everything cranked up in the sim (well graphics wise, I leave autogen and traffic turned down) and I don't have this problem at all. Usually when this happens its processor lag, or graphics lag. My guess is that a proper defrag will do the trick just fine, but if it doesn't a proper reinstall of your graphics drivers and then cranking the drivers up should get rid of the problem.

Cheers

I have all the latest drivers. My specs are in moderation (I'm fairly experienced, they're not silly, trust me).

My trial for O&O ended ages ago. Any other good defraggers?

PS: So you don't get this even if there is a hill infront of the tower view?

Not for free.........but PM me, I may be able to dig something up for you.

Anyway, yes even if there is a hill directly in front of me, no blurries.

Don't worry I have "digged something up already" google is so great isn't it?

I will try the defrag after I've made the decision to whether I should install my VFR Real Scenery again..

When you say that you switch to the tower view, do you do it when you're on the runway (or anywhere at the airport) or when you're flying away from the tower ?

FS (9 or X) loads always only the ground textures and scenery that are very near to your point of view. If you're in your plane, then FS is loading the scenery around your plane, but when you switch to tower view, then FS starts to load the scenery around the tower, and what was loaded around your plane gets discarded from the memory.

That's why, when you switch back to your plane, the sim needs some time for reloading everything.

This happens to me and is very very annoying. I just deleted tower view all together. :)

Start, run, '%APPDATA%', press enter, Microsoft, fsx, cameras.cfg.

Then delete the tower views.

Does anyone even use the tower view anyway?

This issue is real and it is by design and Cam, it will happen to you as well... go do this:

Take off on rwy 34R @ KSEA heading toward Seattle. Go to about 2500-3000ft. Switch to tower view by hitting the "S" button several times. When you get to tower view, hit the "A" button, wait a moment and hit the "A" button again, and then again... switch back to spot view and look down

enjoy the mud

The reason this happens is by design. Some perople see it less than others. If you have a slower system you will see it even after switching from the NORMAL DEFAULT tower view and you do not have to cycle through the towers to see this happen however most better systems will not show this issue as long as you do not CYCLE THROUGH all the towers and leave it on the default tower view when the flight is originally booted.

My solid state drive setup takes about 2-4 seconds to recover from mud where my RAID setup can take as long as 8-10, and that os a professional RAID card on WD Raptors, not some cheap-o motherboard RAID. It only happens to me if I switch towers. If I do not switch towers and leave it on the one that boots with the flight by default, I do not see it happen.

The view change when going from tower to tower forces the sim to use memory for the terrain around the tower you switch to, effectively forcing the sim to dump the area around the aircraft. Usually, as long as you do not cycle through the different towers and only use the one booted with the flight the effect is minimal but as soon as you change tower postions, you will dump the high res (larger mip) from memory and they must all be reloaded.

You should try deleting just the

Title = Facilities Tower

Title = Facilities Runway

and leave the default

Title = Nearest Tower

alone

If your system is very slow deleting all of the tower views may be a better solution however typically, "Nearest Tower' does not display the problem as much because the aircraft you are flying is using the same terrain and similar mip level as that tower view will use, keeping the resolution loss to a minimum..

You will need to re-number the remaining camera defitions in the list so they are in correct numerical order

NOOOO!!!!! You have placed doubts in my mind about my invincible system, you terrible terrible man. Now that I have seen my weakness and know how to correct it I must spring for 64GB solid state drives.

I have deleted all the tower views and renumbered the cfg lines - everything works fine.

HOWEVER, I forgot to make a back up :(, what do I do now?

Btw thanks for all the suggestions  :)
