Touchdown effects gone awol

Postby alb469 » Tue Dec 04, 2007 2:37 pm

My tchdwn effects have suddenly disappeared. Checked in the effects file and they appear in it. My cfg files are correct but none of my a/c show the landing smoke. What could have gone wrong? Are the fsx and fs9 files for effects the same?If not I may have an fs9 file in there . Any help on this problem is appreciated. :-/

Have you adjusted your settings recently? particularly the special effects slider. Check that is at least medium, also give high a go.

I just checked the slider and it was set to high.Guess that rules it out as the problem. But thanks Wingo I never would have thought of that.

Maybe check the ...\Effects\texture\fx_1.bmp file. The default FSX file is 68k-7/26/06-DXT 5 while the FS2002/4 file is 171k-6/18/01-(444).

The 3 default FSX...\Effects\fx_tch*.fx files are 4k-5/12/06

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.

This is something you might want to try. Redownload the aircraft into a folder outside FS and then check each one out to see which air craft had the effects file in it. You should have gotten a error message if there were duplicate files found I hope you did not choose to overwrite them If you did you are going to have a problem trying to restore the files. The only options are to use system restore and go back to a point before you added the aircraft. Be aware if you have addedd anything on your system after that point you will lose it. The only other option is to uninstall and reinstall and this is a drastic measure for such a minor thing. In FS2004 you could pull the orignal files off of the install CDs But Microsoft used a different method to put the files on the DVD'S. I have not figured out a way to copy any files from them but mayby someone else has. Or one other option would be to have someone email you a copy of the files you need. 8-)

Rather than doing a restore, you can use the repair option of the FSX installation disc. It wont effect any add-ons, but if any of them have over written or changed a default file it will be replaced with the real one. Also this works if the file has become crrupt.

I have other problems with fsx including locking up, frame rates at times dropping to zero and very slow loading at times almost 15 minutes from the time you click the start logo until you have an a/c at the gate or on the runway. I thought fs9 was slow but compared to fsx it was greased lightning.I have deleted it and will try another install. My daughter bought it for me as a present and did the install for me.After talking to her she does not think she registered it. Which could maybe explain some of my fsx problems.

I doubt not being registered is your problem. What are your system specs. FSX is a lot more demanding than fs9 was. If you check out the stickies at the top of this forum you will find some tweaks that might help you out.
