I feel like a fool for asking this....

When I land at an airport and taxi to parking, I have this quirk where I want to kill the engines before I end the flight.

Don't blame you for wanting to shut it down quick. I use ATC to guide me to parking, sometimes not. In either case, and depending what airport you're at, it feels like you're taking the scenic tour just to park the AC.

If I'm really bored after landing, I just hit the Escape button.

If you would like to have a more realistic shut-down you could get the shut down checklist for the applicable aircraft.

I start all my planes in a cold cockpit (Thanx to a great add-on helping with that here on simV) using start up checklists.

Same goes for the shut down.

Else, for hazzle free shutdowns "Controll Shift F1"

After a you finish a flight, have parked the aircraft, and shut it completely down, simply save the flight so the next time you launch the Flightsim, load the flight and you're where you left off. A little more realistic that way... ;)

I looked through the control settings and allocated a key to my joystick for the engine shutdown.  Makes it feel like a proper button to shutdown and one to start.  Different setup on my Level D 767 and PMDG 747 though, I use the proper controls for these and always a cold and dark set up.  More often than not taxi back in after landing and set the APU running.  Then when I get to park, I turn off the engines and let the APU provide power, sometimes completing the power down system too...... or just press escape  ;)  ::)

For information, the key combination CTRL+SHIFT+F1 cuts the fuel flow. When you use those keys, your jet engines will shut down :)
But be aware that you WILL NOT be able to start them again using CTRL+E until you FIRST open the fuel again with CTRL+SHIFT+F4 ;)

Thanks everyone for the replies.

Essel,

I actually have one continous flight that I do what you are talking about.  I go from airport to airport around the country and save after each landing.   It's cool that when I reload the flight, I have to go through all the pre-flight steps as well as making sure to refuel before takeoff each time.
