Is there an autogen tweak than can do this...

Postby flyinjoe » Fri Nov 30, 2007 8:43 am

One thing I've come to realize is that I prefer to see trees more than I do generic buildings.  For some reason more trees adds more depth to me.  I know the autogen slider determines how many generic trees and buildings you see, but it controls both at the same time.  When I raise the slider to a level that I like for trees, my performance drops big time because of the added trees, but also because of the added generic buildings.

Is there a tweak for one of the .cfg files that would allow me to reduce the number of buildings that get rendered and/or increase the number of trees so that when I raise the autogen slider it might not be as big a performance hit since not as many buildings are getting rendered?

add the following to the config under the [TERRAIN] heading

[TERRAIN]
TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_TREES_PER_CELL=
TERRAIN_MAX_AUTOGEN_BUILDINGS_PER_CELL=

The dafaults are 4500 trees, 3000 buildings as I recall

reduce the buildings and raise the trees. The max for both lines are 6000/6000

The slider will continue to work and is based on a 5 level breakdown of that number along with the SCENERY RADIUS slider level factored in.

When the scenery radius is set to 100% and the AG slider is set to 100% the total amount in the autogen config lines is displayed. As you reduce the AG slider it reduces the amount per cell based on the number inthe line. Reduce the scenery radius and it cuts it by another percentage

Daube,

Tell me if my thinking is correct here.  If I leave everything alone in the FSX.cfg file and I set the AG slider to max (level 5), then I will render 4500 trees and 3000 buildings per cell.   Now if I was using the Normal setting (which is level 2), than what I was really rendering was 1800 trees and 1200 buildings per cell.   A total of 3000 objects.

So if I wanted to tweak the fsx.cfg file to get more trees and less buildings than what I was seeing on the normal setting, I would set the slider to max and choose a number higher than 1800 for the trees and less than 1200 for the buildings in the autogen max line of the fsx.cfg file.  If I do that, than in theory I should see more trees and less buildings, right? And I wonder if I balance the number to around 3000 if I'd get about the same performance as I was using the normal setting with the stock fsx.cfg file.

Hope that makes sense,

I understand your question but I can hardly answer, unfortunately.
I have never found the courage to make a real comparison in fact :P
What I know is that limiting the autogen with the tweak gave me a better visual result than simply lowering the autogen slider, but then again, I didn't test really seriously, I just based my opinion on a quick visual impression.

Boy, what a great tweak this turned out to be.  I love the added trees and I think I actually increased my frame rates by adjusting the autogen this way instead of just using the sliders.  It's all good.

Thanks for the help guys....

There is no way to place a set number on the value. The sim is dynamic and therefore the landclass installed, the scenery installed, the scenery radius slider, the autogen slider, and then the machine ability all goes into the rendered calculation.

So even if you have the lines set to 6000/6000 and the slider at 100% that does not mean you will see that many items per cell, it only means FSX is being told to render as many items as it can based on the landclass, scenery and finally what the video card/CPU and memory will handle.

Next year when you upgrade the system, that 6000/6000 edit and 100% slider will show you more
