The simple fact is that the vast majority of folks who buy any flightsim title are completely unaware of the the world wide flightsim community, and totally oblivious to any "freeware" releases being available.
Given the total number of FS sales verses the total number of active registered users in the Flight Sim forums I would say this is a true statement.
Most of us here are dedicated FS fans and computer enthusiasts. FS9 was my first flight sim and I blindly bought it because I have always liked airplanes.
I accidently stumbled onto this site doing some research on a particular airplane. With the information I learned here I built my first computer and have been hooked ever since.
Not every computer owner has our degree of enthusiasm towards any program they own.
I have seen people build dedicated machines just to run 3DMark06 just for bragging rights but would not consider a $2.00 upgrade to make a game/sim run better.
I too would have liked to load FSX for the first time, maxed out the settings and watched the beautiful scenery flow by but that was not to be.
Since retiring and having a fixed income I now have to pick and choose my upgrades with a little more care. 2008 is looking good for the new hardware with prices that will be affordable (except for the very highend processors).
Now I have a question:
If I dump my 6000+ AMD and opt for a quad core AMD chip that has a slower clock will I gain ground with the added 2 cores or will I lose because of the slower clock? (Am asking about FSX only)
