Not to hijack this thread, but I didn't see the point of starting a new one with a question that sort of fits here.

I'm new to flight sims and i'm not checked out on jets yet so right now i'm just using prop planes to jump from city to city.  I'm trying to learn how to do ILS approaches in a Beachcraft Baron using this tutorial as some what of a guide.  I know a few things are different between a jet and a prop plane so I can't follow this guide exactly.

I think I'm doing everything right, but where I seem to be having trouble is when they tell me to maintain alt. and heading until established on the localizer.  I never seem to be picked up.  I know my Nav freq. is correct because it's beeping like crazy.  And the little yellow bar on the heading indicator begins to line up, but when it does nothing happens.  What I'm thinking is that I'm using a wrong option on one of the panels.  When I want to get picked up by the localizer, do I turn the autopilot 'heading' button off and turn on the 'nav' button or am I supposed to have them both on?  Or am I completely off base on either of those and my problem is maybe something else?

Thanks for any thoughts,

Joe

Re: Joe ^^

Approach the localizer from below (2800 AGL is a good altitude for most approaches) with your AP on (Nav or HDG, it doesn't matter which, whatever you prefer to use), but also activate the 'Approach' button, when the AP has picked up the localizer, the AP will automatically turn off either the Nav or HDG button, depending on which one you were using.

Don't approach to fast & remember that YOU will have to regulate your airspeed. You don't have to use the AP, you can follow the needles & guide yourself down manually if you like, but it easier with the AP.

Cheers,

TSC.

Just so you know, Mobius... you've been recruited as a Sim Instructor  ;)  ... And so has Esselbach, and he doesn't even know it yet  8-)

The dialup might be a problem, as far as checkrides go...but it's going to be quite a while until we have that worked out.

I'm just hoping that real/world pilots, and sim pilots who've found the value in simming realistically, will join the discussion; share their knowledge/experiences, and passion.. and bring up points we might overlook, or forget. I keep jumping in on threads where people are trying to run before walking... and figured it was time to walk the walk, so to speak  :D  I've got a feeling we can build something good, positive, and fun.

(I'm chugging away in the Flight School forum as we speak)..
