The one in the second link looks absolutely brilliant, nice going Nick.....

Reider

thx

The first one I removed all the atmosphere humidity and went to a very high altitude to show more of the scale and how well the fx blend in as the rays are extended. It would have looked a lot more realistic had I reduced the altitude a bit and more important, put in a proper weather theme.

The atmospheric content plays to the sun and the rays, as you can see in the second link.

just so you know, that streaking effect you have around the sun isn't "godrays", it's called a starburst, it's just a lense effect in real photography

godrays are actually crepuscular rays, they're true 3D beams of light caused by sunlight diffracting through a gap in the clouds and illuminating the air

but this is just semantics, the effect you've created is excellent

I understand the difference between volumetric lighting and lens flairs

In actuality light bloom is a lens flair and yes, part of what I created enhances that as well however that same volumetric lighting which you show in image 2 is simulated by the rays (see the sunset over the horizon image I posted http://www.simviation.com/cgi-bin/yabb2 ... 1192741646 ) that

ah ok, I just assumed from the screenshots that you were going for a pure lense flare effect, it would probably be more clear to me to see it animated, it's cool that you're simulating the rays
