FSX SP1 crashing system

Postby smithdive » Sat Aug 11, 2007 8:43 pm

I ran the programs to tell me if my system will run FSX and all of them show me above the recommended specs. I upgraded FSX with the SP1 last week and now the program keeps crashing after a few minutes of flight. The previous version of FSX worked fine, other than being slow. I have reinstalled FSX twice, followed all the online suggestions. Upgraded all my drivers and and Bios systems. I even set all the graphics to low and still it crashes. I give up. Didn't realize I needed a degree and years of programming to use a flight simulator program.

Ok, well, lets take it one step at a time

You said it did not crash on RTM but only after SP1 was installed

First question.,.. and this assumes you had the original version installed for some time before applying SP1, have tried to delete the FSX.cfg file and let it build a new one?

Also, it was suggested back when the update was first released that it was best to uninstall FSX completely, confirm certain files and folder were deleted, the reboot and install FSX, let it complete, start FSX and let it build the config files, then close FSX, reboot and apply SP1

After that, again start FSX and allow it to complete its upgrade, then set it up and go

Have you tried these as of yet?

I uninstalled again and deleted the mentioned files. Now I can not get it to reinstall. I get this error:

error 1305. error reading from file C:\program files\microsoft games\microsoft flight simulator X\scenery\0302\scenery\dem0302.bgl. Verify that the file exists and that you can access it.

I verified the file is there and I can access it. I tried on different drives and somewhere through the process I get this. I did not get it before.

There can be several reasons for what you are seeing

here is one resolution for that exact error code: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/873281/

and I know someone here had a similar issue and MS had them run the Windows Installer Cleanup/repair

Also, DVD BURN software can install what is known as TSR programs that boot with Windows which interfere with reading the FSX DVD and cause massive corruption or complete install failure. The fix has been to uninstall any DVD burn software and try the install again.

a scratched DVD or defective DVD

It's an installer error.

Thanks for the links. I had to reinstall windows installer and such. I then reinstalled FSX after deleting all the mentioned folders. Once I got FSX reinstalled I opened it and was able to fly it without issues. I then proceeded to load SP1 and restarted the computer. I used enhancer to reset the nividia profiles to those listed in the Nividia thread. Then I ran FSX and after about five minutes it crashed to the desktop.

Today I installed the latest 8800 ultra video card, upgraded my power supply to 600w and installed four new sticks of 1GB memory for a total of 4GB. I also installed a new and high end heat sink for the processor. The processor is an intel dual core 3.2mhz processor. I degragged the drives, double checked that I had the latest drivers for all hardware and the latest Bios. Today I opened FSX and it flew for about five minutes and crashed to the desktop. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
