Aircraft and scenery lighting

Postby armamentdawg » Tue Aug 14, 2007 12:55 pm

Ive logged over 150 hours so far on FSX, and have added dozens of other aircraft.  Recently, the lights in the game (strobes, nav, formation) have begun to show a square around them, instead of the light itself just blnking.  Anyone else have this problem, and how did you fix it?

It sounds to me like somewhere along the line you installed an add-on that replaced the light textures with ones that are incorrectly made for FSX

I have even seen aircraft that do that. I wish aircraft designers would NOT mess with the default lights and make their own textures/FX flies if they wish to change things like that so their aircraft is the only one effected by such changes.

There are light fixes out there, I make one, which change the lights however I know my FS9 textures work in FSX although they needed to be upgraded for performance.

Like I said, it sounds like you installed a light fix addon in which the developer did not make the textures right, or, they work in FS9 but not FSX

I wish I could pinpoint which file it was so I could remove it.

If you are seeing this on ALL the default aircraft, more than likely it is either FX_2.bmp located in the EFFECTS\texture folder or HALO.bmp located in the MAIN FSX texture folder.

FSX does funky things with aircraft lights on the default planes. During the day it uses FX_2.bmp and at night many of them switch to halo.bmp.

Not all of the lights switch, but many of the white marker and beacon lights do, and some strobes

Is this seen both day and night?

It is also possible someones addon installed FX files overwriting the default originals which call or use their own textures. Rare, but I have seen that.

halo.bmp is also the airport lights too so if you are not seeing the problem with airport lights and just the aircraft, more than likely its FX_2.bmp

NOTE: You can NOT remove those files or you loose all the lights associated with them. Those are default files that must be there and the originals.

Check your email, I sent you the originals. Put FX_2.bmp in the EFFECTS\texture folder and halo.bmp in the main FSX texture folder, letting them overwrite the ones that are there. If that does not fix it, someone has overwritten the FX files.
