Vista and FSX

Hi Top of the day to all. This question may be asked already is any body running FSX with Vista and if is there any significant difference? Thanks.

Scattered through the threads there are many references to FSX and Vista - with a mixed bag of comments.

However I have been running FSX on Vista for some time without any problems.

There are some things to learn, particularly with administrator control - but there was a lot to learn when XP came in.

Some posters have the 64 bit version which has no problems with memory - with the 32 bit system there is an ongoing problem with system memory and RAM.  There are good work-arounds for this.

BUT there is no need to make the change UNLESS you have, or about to get one of the new x8800 series video cards which are the only ones that can process DX10 - AND Mr Gates has bundled DX10 with Vista.

MS is going to release a DX10 patch around Nov Dec which is destined to improve FSX 10.

That's when the decisions will have to be taken.

I personally ran FSX on both Windows XP SP2 and now on Vista and have not experienced such a huge difference.

I would believe that Vista will be a better operating system for FSX when Direct X10 comes around. Only then the difference between XP and Vista may be seen as huge.

I really think that the DX10 patch won't be what everyone is expecting. It's a ton of work to convert a DX9 game into DX10 and also add new features. I think that FSX will look almost the same in DX10 and will run much, much slower. We've all seen this happen with Call of Juarez, Lost Planet and Company of Heroes... they all ran at insane fps under DX9 and they run really really slowly under DX10... and the difference in quality is almost unnoticable!

If that's the case it will be a huge let down,

and place the entire product at commercial risk.

Obviously I will wait and see, but FSX though excellent in its basics has proven to be a total handfull - a veritable nightmare - to get running even reasonably well.

For those who have paid their money for Dx10 ready video cards to be served a dud would be the finish.

I can only hope that the ACES team is aware of the strong feeling in the sim community, and I hope that their money managers do not stop them getting it right - rather than rushing it on to the market.

and hopefully get to drop a flower bomb or 3.....

Yea, we'll have to wait and see. But it really seems like DX10 requires a lot more processing power to display even the same things as DX9. On the other hand, when more powerful hardware becomes available DX10 will allow developers to create much better-looking games than with DX9.
And DX10 has other advantages. I've been learning how to program using the DX10 SDK and I can tell you that it's way more powerful than DX9 and way easier to work with. DX9 was a complete mess but DX10 was redesigned from scratch and is really well organized. That will allow developers to produce great games and in less time.
