Blurred Images

In the following screenshot, I have all the scenery/texture sliders maxed out. For reasons unknown, the shot is blurred. I've seen better on rocky edges, but don't know why it is now blurred. I have a low end ATI 128MB video card and wonder if it's having trouble getting the image to appear in focus. I also have 2GB of RAM.

Is this a video driver problem? I've been to the ATI website and have downloaded the lastest display drivers, but am a little reluctant to install it at the moment. Is the card not adequate to handle maxed scenery/textures in FSX? I know I should upgrade to at least a 256MB video card, but I would like to see if I can correct it before going that route.

Is this something that SP1 can fix? I have downloaded it, but have not installed it. I've heard that if you just want to "play FSX out of the box" then SP1 won't be necessary.

I dont know where you got the information about Sp1, but it is critical it be installed, especially for a slower system and video card

When I made the settings suggestions I did, I assumed you were on SP1 because the default install sliders and edits would be different without it.

If you have not added any add-on textures or scenery and are just using the default, just close the sim, reboot, run the SP1 installer, when finished reboot and you will probably find it would be best to move the original FSX.cfg file out of its folder for safe keeping and reference and let Sp1 FSX write a new one when it is booted.

Just keep the old one on the desktop as a reference to the line edits till you get the new one set up and tweaked.

The first time SP1 fires up it will run scenery config and write new entries. Once its finished and the control panel is booted I would close the sim, make the basic edits to the NEW FSX.cfg file and reboot the computer to clear the initial load from not having the line:

DisablePreload=1

In the file.

Upon reboot fire up the sim and then start setting things up, sliders and basic edits first, then fly and tweak as needed.

Sp1 will significantly reduce the load on your slower video card, dont let anyone tell you different.


Its possible the blurs in the image you posted may be because your video card cant handle everything being thrown at it. A x300 is not going to handle scenery sliders maxed out. A 8800GTX overclocked can barely run that

I always appreciate your help. I'm saving a copy of your reply in a file that I have on FSX settings. As tempting as it is to fix right now, it's rather late, so I'll do it sometime tomorrow.

just a side note, you cant edit the FSX.cfg file while the sim is open. It must always be closed before edits are made to that file or it will erase any line edit you make as soon as you close the sim.

Yep, that is very true.

I know I said I was going to do the SP1 update tomorrow, as well as re-add the changes you have mentioned over the past week. However, I have a bad habit of wanting to fix things right then and there and will spend whatever time I need to fix it.

Having done the update, I'm happy to say that while I can't go full max on graphics with my video card, I can now maintain 25 fps with clouds and mountains. Couldn't do that before.

However, do not forget that there are still a lot of tweaks that can be applied to the FSX.cfg, to customize the performance so that you get the best results depending on your hardware

Are you really serious? Or are you willing to reconsider given a much more than decent CPU-RAM-Mobo setup?

No, I am not going to reconsider.

You wont even see everything FSX has to offer running 2 of the fastest video cards on the market, overclocked on dry ice or liquid nitrogen and a overclocked quad core cooled the same

The hardware designed to render 10 TIMES the code of FS9 every millisecond the program runs will not be available until the end of next year
