higher frame rates when paused

FSX including FSX Steam version.

higher frame rates when paused

Postby IRML » Sat Jun 23, 2007 5:58 pm

is anyone else noticing their frame rates jump up about 10 fps when FSX is paused, it's not the polys on screen causing a bad frame rate because I can pause and then move the camera around and everything is smooth, but when I unpause it and everything starts moving again I drop about 10 frames

does anyone know what's causing this?

It will jump when you pause, its common sense....

When unpaused things are constantly being rerendered and in turn causing lower fps. When paused, stuff stops being rerendered. Its the same when you pan around the views..... Lower fps occur.

no, because the paused stuff is still being rendered, if it's 3D geometry on the screen it's been rendered no matter what, and the fact that I can pan about and slew the camera around at a higher FPS then when it's paused means something is inefficient in moving the traffic and aircraft around

lol if everything "stops being rerendered" then surely the FPS meter would display 0 fps and I wouldn't be able to pan the camera around because nothing new could appear on screen

So if I pause the simulation. Look to the left... that's same same rendering... right?

its a combination of everything.  when you pause, its still rendering everything, but the actual Simulation has been paused, meaning, the CPU is now only thinking about the pause menu, keypresses, and the camera postion, but is not concerned with the actual physics of the plane.

ok so it's sim stuff that's really slowing things down, I guess I'll have to live with it, I can't tweak it any more than I already have

When you paused, it is still rendering, but once it has rendered a particular aspect, say the mesh, it doesn't have to keep rendering it.  It can move on and render other things.  Wheras, when you are moving, it will have to re-render the mesh and then move onto other things, which it will attempt to do simultaneously.

More than the plane physics or AI traffic, what actually makes the FPS jump when you pause is stopping the terrain construction.
When you are goign forward, the CPU has to process the terrain, build its shape, place the autogen etc...
When you're paused the plane stops moving, but the FPS raise progressively, because the CPU is still sharpening some textures and placing some late autogen. Only when this is all finished, you get the max FPS.
