Ultimate Terrain USA is clearly a winner for some, but on my system, or because of my poor tweaking, it does not run smoothly.
The new SceneryTech landclass looked to be a good alternative, but they have plonked a large multi-storied building at the approach end of Runway 27, the ILS runway at Victoria CYYJ - more than a little unrealistic. And as I like to fly VFR in the Seattle, Vancouver, Victoria it is a nonsense. I know about the square mile minimum texture size in FS, but do I have to buy a scenery builder to get rid of these unneeded misplace buildings.
And as I grew up in Nelson NZ, I think the Red Baron Entertainment mesh and topo is great, but in my hometown it puts multistoried buildings on to mud flats and sandbars.
FSX Genesis has always been a favourite mesh add-on, yet every time I load, FSX warns me that five FSGenesis files are missing for Scenery areas that don't exist.
I bought the VFR GenX photoscenery for the UK, and it is fantastic. But it was advertised with night lighting which still hasn't eventuated.
Only UK200 seems to have conquered the plateaus and valleys into which higher resolution mesh places airports. For the rest of the world better mesh, except where freeware mods exist remain in these ridiculous postures. Yes yes I know the rules about runways in FS, but why improve the world and make us suspend reality around airports.
Is this just a vent. Yes of course, and it makes me feel better for the rant. I am also a realist but it does gripe me more than a little that payware sellers seem so often to miss out on the quality control that would lift their product above the pack.
