Most pre-FSX aircraft guages won't work in FSX. The ones that usually will work are the ones specifically designed for FSX.

That's not entirely true.
FS98 gauges will not work in FSX. That is for sure.
Many FS2002, Fs2004 and CFS2 gauges will work in FSX.
Any XML gauges should work in FSX ( those generally are in ".CAB" files ) but there are
some glitches with some aspects of XML and KEY event code that have changed in FSX
and even XML gauges may not work 100%...engine start code for one and XML statements
using "pound per hour" as UNITS and two that I know of.
I just load panels and gauges from FS9 aircraft that I import into FSX and test them.
If a gauge is not supported or does not work properly I simply find a replacement
gauge, if possible. If too many gauges do not work or are of the FS98 variety, I simply
abandon the effort and delete that aircraft.
One note...whenever you are importing an FS9 aircraft it is best to keep the gauges
that you import with it in the aircrafts PANEL folder. That way it is easier to delete the
whole package if necessary.
