Using the W key in FSX after FS9

Postby Sean Grenyer » Wed Jun 20, 2007 5:20 am

Hi

Just starting to use FSX after being an avid FS9 fan. Great for the most part but one thing I liked in FS9 that I can't find in FSX is below. Can anyone help or am I stuck without it?

When taxiing to the runway I used to press the W key to get the 'mini-cockpit' and then use the cursor keys (or HAT button on my joystick) to have a look around the airport as I was taxiing. The same thing in FSX just gives you the left/right/back interior cockpit views. I know it's not realistic but it's what I enjoyed doing. Is there any way to look 'out of the aircraft' without the cockpit being in the way?

Thanks in advance

Keep pressing "S" until you see the outside of the aircraft.

Nuff said.

Sorry I don't think I explained myself properly. In FS9 cockpit view if you press W you the cockpit reduces to just a small row of dials (on most default prop aircraft) and you can then use the cursor keys to look left, right, back, etc without the cockpit interior being in the way, ie you can look behind you if you wanted. I can't see how you can do this in FSX.

Well, I under stand your problem but there is a new feature in FSX which may help you.

In the Options/Display/Aircraft settings tab you can find a slider which ajdusts "2-D panel transperency"

If you set it, like me, to about 30%, you can see outside the 2-D cockpit while keeping your instruments in sight.

As for what you wanted, first go to the VC mode (virtual cockpit, the 3-D one) and then press the A button until you get to the 2-D panel (it says all of that stuff in red in the upper right hand corner) Then I belive "W" will still change it to the reduced view. I'm not completely sure becuase I just use the see through feature I explained earlier.

Hope that helps!

it still does that in fsx...right?  When you are in cockpit view, press w, and it shows the outside world and the needed gauges...right?

I'm quite sure you can still do it in FSX. I haven't used it recently or often, but I'm quite sure I've hit W and had it happen

I think I know what he might be talking about...maybe. There was a down load you could get for FS9 that had mini gauges. These gauges were lower on the screen than the gauges that the jet aircraft use.

No, I don't mean a download.

Right - a step by step guide to what I mean:

1. Start FS9 using the default Cessna at any airfield.
2. From the normal cockpit view press the W key and you will get a row of small gauges and a view forward.
3. With NumLock ON press the DOWN ARROW key and you will get a view behind the aircraft (not OF the aircraft but FROM it).

If you do this in FSX pressing the DOWN ARROW key will give you a view of the back of the pilots seat.

Any ideas?
