FS SkyWorld almost works for FSX !!

Postby Daube » Mon Jun 04, 2007 7:28 pm

Hi all,

I made a little experiment this evening: I have installed FS Skyworld 2004, and tested it briefly with FSX.
FS SkyWorld was a very famous freeware program that let you install a big set of new clouds and sky colors for FS2004. You could choose from more than 10 sets of new cumulus, and even more colors for dawn, day or dusk skies (deep or light blue, purple, red, orange, combination, etc...)

In FSX, it seems that one can install the clouds with no problems at all.
However, it does not work for the sky colors: I get a flashing screen with repetitive design (like when Windows goes bad, and you can see the trails of the window you are dragging, or the trail of your mouse, see what I mean ? ) everywhere the sky should appear. No problems with the ground, bu as soon as you look up, the graphics go crazy :P

However, the error was repaired by re-pasting all the original sky*.* textures in the Texture folder of FSX.
So, remember: make a BACKUP OF YPOUR ORIGINAL FSX "TEXTURE" FOLDER FIRST !!!

Here is a little screenie of my experiments. Could anybody confirm this is working ?

BTW, this is Alpnach Mill at dusk, beautifull area in FSX :)

What texture format do the FSSW textures have? DXT3? And the default FSX textures? DXT5?

Try bringing the FSSW textures into FSX's format if there really is a difference.

That could work, this is right, but still I find it strange that the clouds work with no problems and only the sky color is causing problems...
Anyway, for now I'm still experimenting with clouds, trying to find the best set. I had chosen a very nice one when I was still using FS9, but I can't remember which one it was anymore

They are not so beautifull and they ae heavy on the frames.

Erm...my frames don't drop if I set the cloud radius to 60 or 110 miles, so that's a clear "no".

I have a crappy video card   :P ;D
OK, most likely I didn't test seriously enough. But however I cannot remember the default clouds looked that good...
Maybe you could post one or two pics to compare with the ones above ?
