Nick, could you please do the autogen numbers for me?  ;) Don't worry about the rest because I'll handle it. :)

Nick:  many thanks.  My one variation is that at 19 I was getting stutters. This has happened to me before when framerates are locked too low - why I don't know.  I moved it up to 24 and it runs beautifully.  I used the lower autogen settings in the cfg file when it was stuttering and haven't gone back up, but will try that tonight.  My only problem is some on/off flickering which I suspect is a Vista/FSX instability.  I resolve it with the alt+enter technique, but if you think it has to do with some of the video card settings that are listed in this thread please let me know. Also there are so many alternate opinions whether anti-aliasing and AF should be card or application controlled.  What is your recommendation?  Apart from the flickers it is a great experience.  I have been running two tests, Bella Coola (CYBD) using a great enhancement-the sim slides past with great smoothness against the mountains, and Seattle, where it is always possible to promote stutters by upping the settings.  The Cloud9 landclass world seems only to be available on disk and as I am in Australia it would take 10 days to get here.  I am happy to buy some of their regional landclass if it has the same effect that you seek. Please let me know. But as someone else said so well "so smoooooooth".

Nick:  thanks for such a quick response. From the time on the post it looks like after midnight somewhere in the northern hemisphere.  I shall buy a couple of the Cloud9 landclass regionals tonight and see how they run. Also I notice there are at least three textures mods that claim to reduce the size of the default, (which I have reinstalled). Do you recommend any of them.  I had been using the Ian Thatcher version up until recently or should I leave well enough alone. Right at the moment I am doing Coastguard radio duty, as a volunteer, in Melbourne Australia at 1515 in the afternoon.

Sorry, and yes I had the new CPU installed a little over two weeks ago so I assume they installed the latest driver.  And yes the flickers only started then. I shall hunt down the previous 8800 driver and see if that resolves the issue.

The problem of on/off flickering still occurs, but under a set of predictable circumstances.  If I begin and end a flight without changing any settings, location or aicraft then there seems to be no problem.  If I do any of the above then the flickering begins as I make any change, including views.  I had a total hang of the King Air, and that may relate to the sound files or hardware I suspect. In practice I have to shut down FSX and restart afresh to ensure the problem does not occur. I guess that seeking a solution is like poking a needle into a pile of spaghetti, or something, so I can only trust that the two SPs, one for FSX and the other for Vista make the difference, as well as the next nvidia driver.

I did a little checking on the flickering issue and it does seem to be specific to FSX/Vista and Nvidia.

Try this... As a test when it happens, instead of rebooting FSX try and change the monitor resolution to one that is lower than x32, the menu, go to options->display, and change the depth and resolution of the game to the monitors, click oK then change it back.

I suspect you may have to set up all the views again

If it fixes it without having to reboot FSX, I suspect it is a FSX issue with Vista and multi-monitors on a Nvidia adapter.

It's very possible such monitor issues may be addressed in SP1

There was also the guy who was asked why he kept on banging his head against the wall.  He answered that it felt great when he stopped.

I keep getting clear answers to questions I have made complicated. Thanks Nick. I dropped the resolution from 3084 to 3072 and the flickering completely stopped.  I changed all sorts of settings, aircrafts and airports on the fly, and the game remained absolutely stable.  Also the game smoothed out and I was able to push the sliders up to Dense and Dense, Very Dense starts the microstutters that began much earlier before but would also quite frankly be seen as acceptable to most of us.  Certainly it is not as sharp, but the flying pleasure has gone vertical.  I am flying on water at 2x and if I cut it back I might get very dense and very dense.  I thought I might be able to get my second screen back, but although the flickers are not as drastic as on the higher resolution, it is still unuseable.  Roll on SP1x2.

Also with my capacity to make simple things hard, the landclass I installed then started to give me an error message that it couldn't locate the source folder.  So out of frustration I dropped the Australian bgls into the addon scenery\scenery folder and voila it works.  I will try the US bgls tonight. One question, both seasons files have the same name - I assume they both do exactly the same job?

Incidentally has anyone tried the instant scenery utility from Flight 1.  It sounds simpler than conventional scenery making, but for me even the simple can be too hard.  I'd be glad if anyone could give me feedback.  I could then put some high-rise onto southeast Queensland beaches.

Thanks again Nick:  flightsim is all about banging your head against a wall - it feels great when you select Control+C.
