The system never hangs in windows. It usually hangs on a start up when I reboot. When I get nothing on my screen, I then hit the power button off and then back on. If I still can't get nothing then I do a CMOS clear.

And this just started.

Starting the computer and it hanging has nothing to do with the items we removed so we are dealing with something else.

Given the 11.8v rail reading it is very possible the extra boost to the components is pushing the PSU.

Let me go back in the thread and pull a set of numbers that will work at lower chipset voltage

Good to know it booted OK this morning. I posted some power supply numbers in PM for you to use for shopping.

It may be difficult to find a good PSU at typical computer stores. Most of them sell junk.

SLi certifed means nothing, it can be SLi certified for 2 6600GT's

As for some suggestions to PSU's from local suppliers such as bestbuy, etc, ...

Most over the counter PSU units with 3 or more rails must be 700+ watts to come close to being OK

...would just squeeze by to do the job OK because each 12v rail is 20A and the 3.3v rail only runs 24A

I would not buy that one but used it as an example here.

Has a true combined 12v rating and even though the 4 12v rails are 18A, the increased 3.3 and 5v ratings, along with a true combined 12v rail, will do the job as well and would be a much better choice over the BFG


I do not like 3-4 rail supplies but if you must purchase from a local store, the Thermaltake ToughPower W0104 and the W0105 from Office Depot would be OK but do NOT expect to put another 8800GTS in tandum with either of those PSU's

That's the PSU I have. I don't know the exact specs from memory, but it has 30A on the +12V line and was quite cheap...about $55.

His problem is he must buy from a local supplier so he is limited by the choices.

As for that unit, it depends on the rest of the specs. With single rail a 12v rating of 30A and a decent 3.3 and 5v rail, yes it would work better than the one he has but not by much for clocking unles the 5v and 3.3v rails were in the 28-34A range

Just goes to show the watt rating is not the way to shop for a PSU

That would not be worth a purchase for him. If he had the supply now in his system he would not be seeing the power rail problem but it is still on the edge of what I would consider OK to clock, especially with an 8800 card. It would definitely work better than what he has though.
