Graphics card problem i pressume

Hi i have a XFX 7950GT Geforce DDR3 512mb

AMD Opteron 175 skt 939 2.2ghz

768MB RAM DDR400 PC3200

ASUS A8V VM SE

80Gb 7200RPM MAxtor HDD

i can run FSX at a minimum of 23FPS with no autogen and in a fair area, when doing the co-operat mission in Tokyo my FPS are about 8

The main problem is though, when i am flying normal anywhere and my FPS are 23, it seems to be consistent that the FPS drop to about 6 and a noise higher pitched than anything in the room can be heared from the Computer. this noise and FPS reduction lasts about 30 seconds then the noise goes away and the flight is smooth. about 2 minutes later it happens again and its consisten

i will provide any technical info and pictures, videos etc. i just wish someone knew the answer. And i will be upgrading to 2GB RAM

If your graphic card has a fan, check that first. If the fan is bad or full of dust, you may get a noise from it, the rpms may fluctuate and it may not run at required rpm to keep the card cool...it happened to me once with an old Diamond card.

No its that weired silver metal thing with silver tubes, looks more like a space craft. my CPU has a fan but also has copper tubes :S

Anyway i know i need a new Motherboard because 2.2ghz isn't enough, and 2GB RAM is a must. but it runs so fine 70 % of the time, but those 30 seconds are so annoying

I guess your next diagnostic should be checking your CPU fan for the same. Running FSX will tend to tax your CPU.

Nah thats brand new with no dust etc. my computer runs really nice and even Sketchup which demands a lot is good until i start going into very detailed stuff

its the fact that it isn't all the time, but very consitent in being about 30 seconds out of 180 seconds

i wish someone had the same problem so i knew i wasn't alone

Have you looked real good at your video most cards with that much ram will have small fans on them.
If yours does not have one check out the power supply fan or fans some power supplies have two fans. I would alomost bet money that the noise you are hearing is coming from a fan.
   Go to the site below and down load a free mother board monitor it will show you all of your fans and will let you know if you have any problems anywhere. These monitors are worth it as they will help you to spot a problem before it gets out of hand.

I already had that MBM5

I have the APU fan, the CPU fan and a fan in the side of the computer.

the GPU uses total silent cooling :S

i do know i need more RAM but i was thinking of getting the ASUS motherboard that enables overclocking because mine doesn't allow overclocking, well not that i know of.

i just want to maybe wait until there is a much better system available, but for now if i could just run FSX on the settings i have but withought this 30 second thing, i would be happy

I had MBM5 running whilst on the ground at Liverpool JLA. i was just parked up in the cockpit, my CPU temp was 36 and my case was 46, when the sound kicked in and the drop in FPS, the temps did not alter.

so when im stopped at a gate or flying at 35000ft, the stupid performance issue still happens

I note that you only have 512 Mb of RAM which is really not  sufficient to run FSX. (You need 2Gb at least!)
This will mean that every now and then your Hard Drive has to kick in to refresh the memory with new data (instead of running continuously from plenty of installed RAM). This will cause a serious drop in the frame rate whilst this is occurring!

Therefore, is there a chance that you may have a very noisy Hard Drive...??

Have a look at the Hard Drive light when the noise occurs......!

Something i hadn't thought of and yo may have a very good point. well as my computer case is a gaming one i haven't got round to plugging the light cables in etc so i cannot see, but wheni  get my 2GB in the coming week i shall come back to this forum and let you all know

I've noticed something, i have MBM5 running and when i start the computer up after hours of being off, the CPU temperature is 23-25. OK. so when i put fsx on it slowly increases up and as soon as it hits 39 degrees C the fps drop and the whistling noise. so i pause fsx and minimize it and the cpu temp goes down to 33-35. then when i maximize and unpause, it goes up again until 39 and the fps drop and etc.

do i need better `protection` for the CPU, i thought about water cooling or is there more work on the CPU due to only small RAM?

My experience has been when it comes to the CPU, the more cooling the better. After I built my system I upgraded to a larger CPU cooling fan and noticed a vast improvement in performance in everything! The 2gig of ram upgrade will definitely improve your system performance in general. After I started the simming thing, I invested ten dollars in obtaining a hard drive cooling fan and also noticed an improvement with the sims and other graphic applications. One step at a time...try your new 2gig upgrade, see what happens and go from there. I still wonder if the noise you experience is originating from on of the fans in your system...guess at this point it wouldn't hurt to double check them all again.

With proper cooling, you can even do some overclocking further improving performance.

But cooling is more than just a new CPU fan, you'll need a good airflow in the case as well.

Last I heard MBM was discontinued, I use Speedfan instead or a scab board connected to an LCD module.  It could well be that the MBM is sensing a pre set load (temp) and turning on the fans, hence the drop, with the memory not helping the matter at all.  I`d say increase the threshold to say 55-60 (still safe as houses) and see the difference.  Personally, I turn all my task tray apps off, including Speedfan.  Then occasionally come off full screen mode quickly and check the temps, usually using an LCD module I work on for a company in Washington, or turn Speedfan back on a moment.  After monitoring over some time I know I don`t need it on all the time.
