747-400 ILS Problems

Postby reider » Sat Apr 21, 2007 8:19 pm

I fly ILS in the 737-800 no problems whatsoever, 100% every time it works. When I apply the same settings to the 747-400 it aligns with the runway perfectly, same height given from control as the 737, same distance out, morse code signal can be heard and nav radio is on the identical setting. Course setting is identical. It does not lock to the glideslope though even though its the same airport with ILS. Tried it on three airports that all work with the default 737. The only way I can do it is to start with the 737, set it up and swap back to the 747. Looking at the settings with a fine tooth comb they are still identical??? Any ideas? I want to fly this plane 3,500 miles and although I can land it manually no problems whatsoever, I would like to use the ILS as 85% of the worlds pilots do.

Tried Manchester, Liverpool, Blackpool and Isle Of Man so far. Yes it is under the glideslope, same as the 737. Its not too close and not too far away from the airport. Settings are identical but the 737 joins the glideslope and the 747 just continues the same direction as the runway and at its present height. Wondering if something else has to be set that doesn`t need to be done in the 737. Thought it would be relatively easy with them both being Boeing.

Simple maybe silly question, but have you switched from GPS back to Nav, then pushed approach.  I usually use Heading on the Glide Slope Intercept, with Appr armed.

Yes, identical setup to the 737, but one works, the other works except for the glide slope lock.  If it were working correctly then heading would be unlocked from hold as it intercepts the signal, which mine does.  Then, at the right moment it should unlock the altitude hold as well.  On the 737 it does both of these.  On the 747 it does the heading hold unlock but not the altitude.  I`ve been told that the 747 is a heavy and needs a longer glideslope hold but I`ve tried it further back and when swapping from one plane to another it does the job anyway under a saved settings scenario.  In this situation the heading hold comes off on its own, then later the altitude heading comes off also, as it should.  Just doesn`t do it without first swapping from the 737 to the 747 via a saved scenario.

Tried it again today, 3 airports and 5 ILS landings later with the 747, seems to have lost its glitch.  Don`t know what it was.  One more test landing, lunch (don`t like the inflight meals) and then its off to the Caribbean-St Maarten.  Wheres me shorts?
