FS X and Vista.

Postby chris1060 » Fri Mar 02, 2007 4:34 pm

I installed FS X a while ago and it ran horrible on my computer so I uninstalled it, now I have Vista but didn't install it yet because FS9 is not yet compatiable with it. So if I put Vista in my computer do you think it will run FSX alot better or am I wasting my time.

If FSX runs horribilly on your computer, you can bet your money that Vista will not run properly as Vista requires a very high-end machine for decent performance. So, if I were you, wait a at least 3-4 more months, upgrade your system, then install Vista. ::)

If your like me, with a system thats allready taxed running FSX, not only would I wait, but I would also put $25 a week in a jar so that by the time the FSX Vista patch is out, you can buy a machine that will accually run the software.  I've been doing that since october myself.  Otherwise, I don't know what to tell you, except I hope you like FS9...... ;D

I have Vista 64 bit and FSX running comfortably on a 64 bit AMD 3000 sytem with non SATA drive and 1 gig DDR memory.  This using a Geforce 7300 GS video card.  It doesn`t run optimum but it runs well and plays well, unless you go to New York or somewhere, turn the settings down and it works there too.

On the other hand, I now have a AMD 3800+ dual core, SATA drive and 2 gig DDR2 memory with Geforce 7600GT.  It runs FSX really well in the MCE 2005 that was supplied.  Most settings are on Ultra High, traffic is set at 100% and though the frames do drop I can fly in New York without dropping the settings.   The system comes with a Vista 32 bit update to be applied for.  I know for a fact that this update and FSX coexist nicely, I`ve spoken to others that have the same setup.  Don`t believe all the bad hype out there re Vista, it isn`t quite the ogre they`d have you believe.  It can be difficult to get drivers for some hardware, though easier in 32 bit than 64-thats true of XP Pro 32 bit and 64 also.......  I have both of them as well (7 puters here inc a Mac Mini).  Most software works, especially in 32 bit Vista-though there are some that don`t.  I will be installing dual boot XP or MCE(not stuck on MCE) with Vista 32 bit, if at all possible-this depends if they lock the upgrade or not, I suspect they will.  Since my experience with 64 bit Vista and FSX I will definately be moving FSX Deluxe to the Vista 32 bit partition, no compunctions at all.  Whereas, I will keep FSX Standard on my existing 64 bit Vista Machine which dual boots with XP Pro.

I would have been happy with the 3000 setup, except the base unit 3800+ inc fan (1 meg cache), tower, power, sata 160 gig drive, 1 gig mem, dual layer dvd, card reader, onboard sound, onboard vid, onboard network and a years Norton Firewall/Antivirus, plus upgrade to Vista Premium 32 bit was only

Hi, I have Vista home premium running on an AMD 4200 dual core with 2GB ram and a 1GB PCI-E video card.  I can maintain over 20 fps all the time by simply tweaking a couple of settings..If you have a dual or quad core processor enter your task manager and set the affinity for the game to just one core--1 for a dual core or 4 for a quad core, then set the priority to high.  That processor will then devote most of its resources to the game.  The OS and other programs are handled by the other processor(s).  In normal areas my frame rates are often maxed out at 30fps where I set it--you don't need it any higher because because the eye cannot recognize frame rates above 24--that's the speed on a projector.  In densely populated areas, the LOWEST rates I get at this setting is 15 and that's still smooth enough for good flying.  Try it and see how it works--all my settings are run at 100% except water and clouds.  Set your water to around 10.  If you use detailed clouds you will lose around 5 fps at these settings.  Oddly, the more altitude you have, the faster the game runs.  Unless you are landing, stay above 10,000 feet over large cities, and you will still get good frame rates.  Besides, in the real world, you're going to be at higher altitudes anyway :D.  Happy flying!

CALM DOWN ALEX!!! It works!

Even if it didn't Microsoft would realease as update for Vista user so that it would... also with Vista you can change the compatibility settings on a program if it doesn't run correctly with Vista...

Vista is awesome! Its the future! Just think... all programs that are being developed now, are going to be created with Vista in mind...  ;) So soon enough people on XP will be having all the problems, not the ones with Vista!  ;D

Well said, I say get used to it now in time for DX10 cos it sure aint gonna work on XP.  Watch the mad rush around then, the changes, the crying over spilt milk, how does this work, how does that work?  The regular XP users who heartily complain about Vista (even tho they never tried it) will be the first to jump ship.  My 64 bit Vista install and usage is aok on my 3000.  Made enquiries about my dual core machine and it too runs happily with Vista.  Soon as Traffic has a patch for Vista its going on there, should the freeby update ever get here.... lol.

I`ve tried it, didn`t really notice much of a difference.  I think its a lot of fuss over very little at the moment.  The machine had only 1 gig of memory so it should have made a difference but didn`t.  This machine has 2 gigs and getting Vista soon but not too fussed about ReadyBoost, though it should be less noticeable on this machine anyway.

More info on it here.....
