How Do You Stay Interested?

I did an all water fly around Alaska - Point Baker (KPB) to Klawock (AQC).  There's lots of water airports around these islands.

I'm on a mission to land at as many airports as I can.  I have over 800 landings so far in 69 hours of play.

I just downloaded the FX2004 version of the Christen Eagle that I used to watch fly at EAA in Oshkosh when I lived there - I love that plane.  It's going to be a long night.  Note to self - find a Long-EZ.

Speaking of EAA - I watched Bob Hoover land his Rockwell P-51 (?) on the back of a moving truck, not unlike the FSX mission, while standing on the flight line.  Classic.

Have you tried joining a VA (Virtual Airline)?  Some have scheduled flights, others fly special missions.  I know mine, Shavron Air, occasionally flies SAR's in Alaska.  I know where your coming from, all gung ho one week, then the next you don't even want to go near the program.

An undying love of aviation.

Since 1973, when I built by first A-7E corsair plastic model, I fell in love with aviation.  In 1979, I joined the US Navy and got orders to VA-195 in Lemoore California....a real A-7E squadron. In 1984 I went to HC-3 in North Island to try out helos, then made my final tour with USS Kitty Hawk Aviation Intermediate Maintenance Department.

Along the way, I got into computers in the early 80s just to fly simulators...From the first MSFS and Jet, to the old microprose F-15 and many, many others.  I belong to CVW-40 virtual and recently formed NALC (Naval Aviation Logistics Command) where a bunch of us old Navy guys (and young civilians) fly realistic carrier ops and support missions thanks to MSFS.  

The possibilities are endless....the flights and friends many, the challenges rewarding.  Some of the young people we had have even gone off to join up and fly the real thing.

In this manner, we relive old memories, and get many new ones.  You either love aviation, or you don't.  Expand your horizons, join a VA or something, and you will feel first hand how to stay interested.

Or how about an approach to a little grass field barely long enough to land the default Beaver. Enable turbulence and use real weather which happens to be a snow storm that cuts visibility down to less than a mile and a half. Now do all this with mountains on three sides of you  in a remote valley that you haven't landed in before and don't know the terrain and you'll have a real white knuckle flight. Oh and don't forget the 15kt crosswind.  :o


Recently I've discovered the support for gliders built into FSX. Finally I'm free from predetermined scenery so I've been trying to fly across the US in a glider. That keeps me busy. You have to plan your route according to the terrain and at times worry about finding more lift before you run out of altitude. So far I've had to land several times because I couldn't find lift but I've always managed to find an airport.

Fly from coast to coast in a 172 in 50-100nm legs. After landing, go to www.airnav.com and check out the airport.. and then Google the airport/town and do a little virtual site-seeing while you're there. When you depart, try to take a screen-shot that matches the aerial shot from airnav...

You could try downloading more planes, that always makes me want to play.

Take screenshots, enter contests at the Studio, ...find someone to fly MP on a regular basis with, visit the MP forum for flying events, program random aircraft failures, set your weather to difficult flying conditions once in a while, add scenery/aircraft to your sim, edit pics, take a flying lesson (real aviation) but in the long run, as mentioned here before, if you don't have a passion and/or obsession with aviation, none of the above will mean much to you in the long run. There's always rpg's...

set a goal for yourself.  im flying through all the countries and us states.  ive covered US and europe, middle east is next.  
its always interesting trying to land an overloaded c5 on a 5000 foot strip...

or buy/download carrier stuff and try messing w/ CFG files to get different planes to land

I`m currently on an around the world tour, especially concentrating on scenic places, places I have I have been to personally, places I have relatives living, friends and relatives on holiday, places I would have liked to go to.  I log the times, distances, fuel used, notes, comments and refueling places I found and will put this up on a web site eventually.  I now know how to customise my own planes how I want them, so that takes up non flying time.  I bought a world globe so I`m learning Geography, was always one of my weak subjects in the past (I`m nearly 48 by the way, never too old to learn).  I printed a series of world maps on seperate sheets and laminated them, so I can see where I am flying at the moment.  I`m working on a huge poster size world map I intend laminating and framing-thats part of the FSX experience too.  I am adding new planes all the time, and getting them working.  I have a Concorde project to get off the ground yet, though I`ve collected the parts.  Its either in the blood or not, I`m trying to find 30 hours in a day at the moment.

Adding tips, tricks, secrets and chat to this and one more forum dealing with FSX.  Thats besides my other forums I either work for or join in with.  I don`t think I`ll run out of stuff, I go like this with an interest for years and never lose the faith.  If its worth doing, then you just go for it.  I`ve had most of the flight sims and still have them, this for me is the best yet.

Don't know if the plane works in FSX, but I downloaded the Global Flyer (single engine, round the world non-stop flight).  I'm gonna do a search for the guy's flightplan and try to reaccomplish it in FS2004, maybe FSX if the plane works there.

what i did

1 - flew around the world, touching almost every major country's capital (highly recommended, it was great fun and a beautiful sight)
2 - Im planning on taking off from Sacramento, CA and landing at every US state's capital.




and the guy who said land at every airport, thats a pretty cool idea that i think i might give a try. ill have to make a list though and check each one off. but should i fly IFR from each to each or would that just be a hassle
