The main thing is not to view this as a 'game' but as it was initially intended - a 'simulator'

You HAVE to be interested in flying to get the best out of the FS series & this applies to FSX too.

If you are not interested in flying then almost inevitably your interest in FSX will be short term.

The idea of FS(X) is to replicate real flying - in a spectrum  - starting at real life 1st solo to the fantasy of flying fast military jets - which does indeed get into the gaming arena.

& the point of FS is that it can provide all that. Realism spanning to pure fantasy aviation fun.  :)

i remember this article on fsinsider.com where sum guy was talking to sum woman (lane wallace or something like that) and he said that he was getting bored of flying (real world flying).  She asked why.  He said it was just boring.  So she asked wat he did.  He sed that he would get up some altitude, set the thing on autopilot, then sit back and relax.

HOW FUN DO YOU THINK THAT WAS???  NOT EVEN FLYING THE BL00DY PLANE!!!

So she sed he needed a piper cub.  He sed fine.  They both flew in it, and the guy was never bored of flying again.

the end...

So be dangerous and do crazy-stupid-FUN stuff.  -  like flying through the buildings in seattle with an extra...
Fly around sceneic areas and enjoy the view  -  like flying to hawaii, or st martin, or alaska, or any place ur curious about.

try ur hand at aircraft uv never flown before, and stuff like that.

that always gets me going.

P.S.  making myself dizzy with TrackIR is also fun (still need to get used to it tho...)

You might start a trip around the world with you setting up some rules at the start (like having a crash means starting all over... ::) ). Then plan your route from airport to airport as you go along.
An example is to be found here (which includes a few more exmaples):

And of course, don't forget about designing your own airplane.

Or... re-do the scenery at your home airport; make it more accurate.

Or... find out your exact lat/lon; put you house there and give yourself a little runway in the back yard (FSX zoning is very flexible).. :)

Bridgestorming (flying under bridges) with all sorts of aircraft.  Canyon flying (Grand Canyon), and there's another cool one in New Zealand.  Building swooping.  Flying where no plane has ever flown before.  Treetop flying.  Acrobatics.  Landing by the seat of your pants.  Taking off from randomly selected airports.  Flying with Steppenwolf's Born To Be Wild blasting.  And I suppose straight and level deserves mention.

Read the posts here, lots of other more sane suggestions.

Nothing much better than this.

I mean, come on FSX's "2.x high" water reflects clouds and the environment. What more do you want?
