FSX Demo - first thoughts

Postby Jehovah_of_Jive » Tue Feb 13, 2007 6:06 pm

Demo runs great! (FSX is why I made my wife buy me a new PC last week!)

Intel Core 2, 1.86 Ghz, 1 Gig Ram, 512MB graphics card, 320 Gigs hard drive.

Suggestions on the forum are that it may not do so well on the real thing. Still, the demo is fab. I got timed out on the demo today... thought for a while that you get a few hours and that's that. But out of curiousity I relaunched and hey presto it still works. So what's the time-out deal? Only get 10 mins or so in the air?

I downloaded some a/c for the demo - I recommend Max Taccoli's Cessna O-1/L-19D series for FSX, and an FS9 Cessna 172 to alias the sound to. Nothing like flying low'n'slow over the islands! I love the tropical forests. Makes me want to do some FAC or AOP work over 'Nam or Italy.

So we get flour bombs... Any chance of marker flares?

If the demo's anything to go by, FSX will be great.

The fact is, as you may have already read, that the demo just handle some little islands in the middle of the Ocean.
As a matter of fact, the number of objects to handle, in the memory and on the screen, is much smaller than on a big full scenery in the real game.

Basically, you can expect a FPS drop over big cities, but over small towns and forest you'll get some similar performance as in the demo.
Also, be aware that 1 Gb of RAM is not enough for flying over big sceneries. You can fly, but you'll get some stutters due to virtual memory and consequent disk accesses, depending on your drives speed.

Six hundred posts in a forum and not knowing that there's a site named Google. ;)
