I have a couple of questions so maybe i can help you more.
1. What type of Joystick are you using
2. What aircraft
On my Saitek X-45 all i have to do when im flying jets with afterburner capabilites i put the throttle up to 100% and the burners kick on in.
hope this helps

I have the same joystick, doesn't have anything to do with it. Check in the assignments options. ;)

Does this aircraft have afterburner effects? And did you install them in the Effects folder?

Having afterburner effects, and having a working afterburner are different things.

Most planes have an effect, that when you apply 100% throttle, the afterburner appears. Although nonfunctional, it's a nice touch.

SOME however, do have an afterburner built in. When you press Shift+F4, the afterburner engages, and you have a very dramatic speed increase. They're only two I can think of off the top of my head, both for FS9. The SAAB Drakken (check the latest military pages), and the Alphasim Eurofighter.

Personally I like the FS9 Mig-29 we've got here. Effect, noise, kick-up-the-botty 8-)

Ozzy's Recommendation is kick-ass indeed! Take-off without the burners.... Pull up sharply immediately after take-off... Stall...Kick in the burners.... Pure magic! 8-)

ALso I think the Yf-23 on Simv had shift+F4 effect afterburners

the effect has nothing to do with the joystick you have. Read the thread fully.

Can't remember for sure, but it seems that one of the jets I had in fs9 had the afterburner effect as a light instead of an effect.  Try turning all of your lights on.
