technically you should only be getting the "Dont sink" warning after takeoff when the gear is retracted and a rate of descent is detected.

You should get a "sink rate" alert when you are in close proximity to the ground and your sink rate is in excess of 1,000 feet per minute.

"Pull up" alerts basically start in when impact to terrain is imminent or you have ignored the sink rate alert for a given period of time.

In real aircraft there is an inhibit function but it is typically only used under certain abnormal conditions.

My recommendation to you would be to maintain at least 1,000 feet per minute climb rate after takeoff until well beyond 5,000 feet AGL... also try not to have a sink rate in excess of 1,000 feet per minute when approaching for a landing or when maneuvering low to the ground.

A typical airliner should be able to make any 3 degree glide slope approach without exceeding approximately 700 - 1000 feet per minute.

I think that under the audio controls there is a slider that can adjust the volume of GPWS warnings... try looking somewhere in there.

there are really three warnings in FSX that im aware of

DONT SINK

PULL UP

SINK RATE

-------------

DONT SINK - activates when you have a sink rate within a certain number of seconds or below a certain altitude after takeoff (i would have to dig out my books to give exact figures)

PULL UP - activates when terrain collision is determined to be imminent by the GPWS computer

SINK RATE - activates when your vertical speed indicator is showing a sink rate of over 1,000 feet per minute during the approach to landing

EDIT: tried it in the sim - the sink rate on final for the "SINK RATE" alert is a little over 1,000 feet per minute.

oh so i was looking at the button config just for fun the other day and i saw Inhibit GPWS  I assume if you set that to a button (default is blank) the voice should go away.

Personally I didnt know about that when I had that problem, so I simply went into the sound folder and deleted the files  ;D

i say keep the warnings on... if your airport is in a sink hole in real life then you would get the warning in real life and there wouldnt be much you could do about it other than hit the inhibit switch.

just depends on what level of realism you were looking for.

In short - approaching an airport in a big hole would require a steep descent, and you WOULD get the warnings even though they may not really be relevant.

but if it ware me i would say leave it on.

If you have to land at and airport that requires a steeper than normal descent then it is possible in real life to deactivate the voice warning. But in practice it is advisable to leave it on because even if a high sink rate IS required the warning helps to concentrate the mind.
There was a famous crash on the approach to Paris many years ago involving a South American airline. He crashed on the road on the approach to the airport because he ignored both the visual instrument and verbal warnings. The cockpit voice recorder registered the famous words "Shut Up Gringo!!" The pilot then turned off the the GPWS and 4 seconds later he and everyone else on board was dead!

yep... "Sink rate" is one thing... but "terrain terrain pull up" is an automatic go around
