Aren't bird strikes, if the bird ain't the size of a Condor generally uncritical for the engines?

It depends on luck, the size and number of engines the aeroplane has, and, what most people forget, whether the bird has caused structural damage to the airframe, which can be quite seroius even with a relatively small bird (as it will be travelling at a relatively high speed)...

I imagine a swallow carrying a coconut would cause quit a bit of damage in a head on! (african or european)

Yes, for the most part a bird (even large ones) injested into a modern turbofan will not cause any damage. In fact prior to certification 'dead' chickens and turkeys are launched into the intake of running engines to ensure no damage is done. Chunks of ice are also used to test the engines. They are very robust pieces of engineering.

then they sweep up the cooked bits from the back and serve it as popcorn chicken. ...or curries if you prefer.

A couple of years ago, a Yak 52 en-route to our Annual Air Race at Shobdon Airfield (EGBS) was involved in a bird strike to one of its wings...
...(The Yak 52).
The damage involved necessitated an immediate return to its home airfield....
...(the Yak 52....not the bird)... ...!

We don't have many large birds in England, (Parrots, Golden Eagles, Pterodactyls, etc), so even a small bird can cause a lot of serious damage to an aircraft... ...!

when i went to RAF Valley for a week last easter with RAF cadets, there was a hawk which had been hit by a herring gul. the trainee-pilot got a face ful!!! It also smelt really really really bad!!!  :P

Hey guys and gals,I am new here but I have been coming to this site since last June when I first picked up fs2004,I started way back when when I was 11 I think on fs5.1 and now I run FSX on my crappy computer but I really enjoy it.Anyhow I was reading this thread on bird strikes and right away I thought of the movie "The Edge" when the plane hits the bird (or if you prefer the other way around) and goes down in the lake after hitting the bird and then the mountain.I'm not going to go into it because most people have seen it but I was just thinking if a real life bird strike is anything like the movie,I would not like to be involved in one,it was a small plane mind you, but still it looks like it is a bad thing no matter what the size of the plane is.Sorry about my rambling on here but I just thought I would add to this thread,anyhow you all seem like a friendly bunch of people and I really like this site.

When I was a trainee pilot in the Jurassic period of Earth's history I remember an instructor got hit on a ferry flight. It made a big hole in the canopy but lodged there sending blood feathers bone fragments etc all over his face!!!

Hi Lee and welcome.
I haven't seen The Edge, so I have no idea if it is accurate or not. Being made in Hollywood, I would guess not, hehe.
But, there have been some serious crashes caused by bird strikes. One I can think of was a United Airlines crash that killed all on board. There are others too that were determined to have been caused by bird strikes. The % is very low though.
Most strikes do not cause enough damage to bring the plane down, but nearly always cause some sort of airframe damage.

There's an Urban Myth/Joke Related to that...

Birdstrike simulators (chicken guns) are currently used by aircraft manufacturers and/or aviation authorities (such as the FAA, UK CAA or NASA) to test aircraft against birdstrikes, and usually work by firing a (dead) chicken at the aircraft. According to the stories, British Rail borrows this device to test the strength of the windshields on their high speed trains. On impact, the chicken shatters the windshield, breaks the operators chair, and comes to rest embedded in the engine. British Rail asks the FAA for help, and receives a one-sentence reply: Thaw the chicken.

Hey Formula_1 and thanks for the welcome I didn't think abouth the made in Hollywood part so it is an unrealistic comparsion it is more of a survival type of film,it's with Anthony Hopkins and Micheal Baldwin I believe,I think it came out in 99 or something and anyway after
