How to set the mixture

Hi
Maybe mine is a stupid question, but how i can set the mixture when i fly, to avoid the msg telling that the engine is losing power because of the mix not setted in the right way.
I remember to have read somewhere that i have to look at a certain gauge to look at the temperature and when is at a certain level, this is the right set..
I try to lean it but most of the time the engine stop..  :o
I fly mostly with the Cessna..

Set to rich for take off, climb, descent and landing
During cruise lean it according to the engine / a/c specs

well the way my teacher says to do it is pull it out until the engine starts to 'cough', then push it in half the way you pulled it out.

so if you pull it out to 4 cm and the engine splutter, push it i 2 cm.

There are several ways to to it, and several situations.

If you do use the "engine cough" method.. make sure there's suitable place to set down  :)

If it's a constant-speep prop plane it gets a little complicated too (as fuel-flow is one of your indicators)..

Since your flying the Cessna (default 172 I'll assume) and it's the 180hp  fuel-injected  model.. I'll tell you how it's done for real..

Full rich for take-off (fields below 3000msl) and keep it full rich until you get above 3000msl and then lean ever so slightly (keeping an eye on EGT temp). If you do not trust the EGT gauge ( or it's too slow to respond.. like the FS one is) then just keep it full rich during climb until you near 5000msl. By then, even in the sim, you'll feel/hear a power reduction, so just lean a bit until the power returns/peaks. You'll see a peak in fuel-flow too (which is NOT realistic, but a method that does work in the sim).. And then when level and with the throttle set where you'll keep it..  lean until fuel-flow peaks (which is kinda like EGT peaking in the way that the sim models it).

Now when descending and landing.. don't forget the "M" in GUMPS    ;)

Hi guys and thanks for the replays!:

I am mostly flying with the Cessna 172 or with the Baron, and the explanation has been perfect!
Well let say i am or want to be an old fashioned pilot, and for me means, ear and..B...T you know what i mean eh?
With the ears listen the engine with the B...T feel the plane... unfortunatly with the ears is ok, what I miss is the feeling of the B..t.. on the seat...  :P

Gas: Is the fuel boost pump on (if necessary)? Am I drawing fuel from the fullest tank (if more than one tank present)?


I'd check the fuel balance too - prevent any nasty shocks should you mess up on short finals...

Weird, here down under we do BUMPS. Brakes off, undercarriage down, mixture/fuel, Prop, security and switches.

20yrs never heard GUMPS??  :-/
