How quickly we have forgotten...

...where we came from.  I admit - I do my fair share of complaining because I want 60fps from my mid-grade machine with FSX cranked up (to which, clearly, I do not come close).  But when I came across this link, it brought me back 15 years when I spent countless hours in front of a VGA monitor with 256 colors looking at similar screens.  A walk down memory lane, perhaps?  We've got it good and it will only get better (though not without the obligatory head-banging sessions we have all gone through with each advance in software and hardware technology - neither of which are ever quite in synch with the other...)

Well, I can honestly say I never used FS3.

Began with FS4, using it a while, then life kept me away from simulations of any types and rediscovered FS with FS98.

At the time it was a quantum leap, even if compared with FS95 (of which I saw at the times some screenshots on the net).

Another quantum leap was from FS2000 (that I did not buy nor use, like I'm going to do with FSX) to FS2002.

Who know if we will see a quantum leap ever again. Hope in FS11. Comparing FSX to FS2000 (the two HAVE a lot of similarities, under the hood), who knows... maybe FS11 will be deserving of attention like FS2002 was.

Roger that . . . but, IMO, FS5 compared to FS5.1 would be a better analogy. Remember (YES, I REMEMBER VERY WELL): "Never buy an FS program which ends with a zero." -- Anonymous.

Yeah, remember that. 5.0 was a thing, while 5.1 was... well, the same but better... and for peace's sake I'm not going to make any fitting comparisons, I have a reputation and shooting on the red cross would be a dishonor.

I started in 1984!! wrote a small sim programme for the BBC computer all of 28k!!! Can you imagine!!! Yes it worked too!!
I migrated onto FS98 didn't like it much then went to FlyII which frankly knocks the sports off anything from FS98 until Fs2004.  I still have it and I'll try to put together a couple of shots for comparison.

For Xmas, 1984 I got a Commodore 128 and Flight Simulator II. I loved that sim. Since then I have owned FS98, FS2002, and FSX. FSX is the best ever. If I was happy with FS2, I can definitely be happy with FSX. The only complaint I have had with FSX is the logbook corruption glitch but I fixed that and can't complain about anything else.

woah way before my time...before i was born in fact...i started on FS98, then ive had each FS since and for the time of release for each sim they where the best and then the next came....obviously....

I've downloaded all the old sims on that page and found after a little search the 5.1 too (which links on that page do not work). Going to install them on my old P233Mx laptop for when I'm outside (it has no 3D acceleration, so FS98 works poorly on it).

Do any of you know if FS95 has fallen among the abandonware too by any chance?

I played my first aircraft game when I was about 6 loaded onto my old amstrad from a tape machine. Not really a sim, (no cockpit) but hey it was planes shooting down other planes and bombing stuff.

Then my first sim years later was Flight Unlimited II* and FS98.



* Me and Fozzer are great fans of that sim. It beat MS sims as one gaming mag put it "clean out of the sky". It sure did.
