Has anyone managed to import the Stearman?

Postby Phiz » Mon Nov 06, 2006 6:21 am

I have the aircraft in FSX: flies fine, and looks even better than in fs9. But the panel has only blank holes for the instruments. I can't track any Stearman gauges in my fs9 Gauges folder. Any advice would be very welcome.  [Maybe aliasing would be possible? I don't how to do it, but would be glad to learn] ???

Hi Phiz,

Look in the panel.cfg file (using Notepad or Wordpad). See what gauges the panel uses. Especially look for gauges that have names starting with {Something}! because that points to a cab file.

Chance is the Stearman panel uses gauges from a FS2004 aircraft that's no longer in FSX - in which case all you need do is copy over its cab file.

BTW which Stearman is it? I copied over the Robert Sanderson one fine but haven't done the Dave Eckert.

It would help to know which Stearman you're talking about. I'm downloading Dave Eckert's package to check it out. http://www.simviation.com/fs2004vintage31.htm

If this is the correct one the file description mentions it includes a panel & gauges so this would be the quickest way to track them down.
FS2004 Stearman Kaydet and Eagle Field Scenery Package. This is a *mostly* new model for FS2004. Model includes 6 new texture choices and models: U.S. Navy N2S-2, Navy N2S-3, PT-13A Pre WWII USAAC, PT-13D USAF, RCAF and civilian colors. Also includes additional scenery of Eagle Field - fictitious field near old Stearman Factory in Wichita, KS. Model, panel and gauges by David Eckert, FDE by Dennis Seeley and scenery by Mark Smith. 17.3MB

Update: If this is  the Dave Eckert version you only need one gauge. It's named daviator_stear.cab
If you have this aircraft in FS2004 you must also have the gauge. In this case I suggest you paste a copy of  daviator_stear.cab into FSX\Gauges.

This forum never fails me!  Many thanks, guys. Hagar wins this week's Phiz award [drinks on me, next time you're in London] I fed daviator_stear. cab into Windows XP 'Search,' and found it. Clicked on it, Edit, Copy, pasted into FSX/Gauges, and YES! My Stearman and me are very happy.  Just one niggle: the sound is peculiar. Gone is that wonderful Stearman engine growl. Now there's no sound in the cockpit, and in spot view a very quiet - even with speakers on Max - nondescript sort of engine noise.  OK, I'm delighted just to have a functioning aircraft, but maybe there's a way to retrieve that growl ... :D ???

Glad you fixed it. Lucky I chose the right one. When asking for help it pays to be as specific as possible & "the Stearman" could apply to any number of different files.

The sound seems to work fine for me. Bear in mind that I downloaded it earlier & installed it to the FSX Demo to check it out for you. I don't have it in my own FS9. Make sure you have the folder named Stearman_PT-13A installed to FSX as there are 5 other variations of the Stearman aliased to use the complete set of sound files in this one.

PS. These are the 6 variations.

" I have the aircraft in FSX:"

No mention how this was accomplished but I simply copied&pasted my FS9 default Mooney_bravo into FSX and changed the folder name to Mooney_Bravo_FS9 and went flying in FSX Deluxe version.

Ah, but does he have YouTube videoto prove it? Yes, complete with all gauges.

You never miss an opportunity. LOL :P :D

Yes, complete with all gauges.

Not surprising as it's a M$ default aircraft. I don't know if the Mooney Bravo comes with FSX but if it's anything like FS9 it will include default gauges from earlier versions of FS. For example; FS9 includes the gauges for the default CFS1, FS2000, CFS2 & FS2002 aircraft like the bf109, Spitfire, Concorde, Sopcamel etc. etc. A lot of 3rd party developers don't seem to realise this.

Roger that, Hager . . . but I hope it proves the point how simple some of this stuff is: copy&paste it in and see what happens  ::) Worked for me.

Your observations about the FSX Mooney are quite timely inasmuch as the FSX model is very close to the FS9 in appearance but has more-realistic performance. Why, the FS9 DXT3 texture will fit right on the FSX model -- believe it or not -- it must be the same plane. Cool.

I did not have to repaint and FSX Mooney version for FSX -- again -- I just copied and pasted the FS9 textures into an FSX Mooney texture.folder and viola! -- instant repaint.

Some of this stuff is so simple I can't believe it!
Ah, but does he have an FSX screenshot to prove the Mooeny repaint shows up in FSX? You bet.
