Good card for the game?

Postby KurtangleTN » Thu Aug 17, 2006 8:38 pm

So, I found out not suprisingly my Radeon 9600 XT, is not good enough, I figure its time to upgrade after 2 years coming xmas.

What do you guys think a good card for this game currently out on the market is? I always lean to ATI, but if somone with a Nvidia card says that he got a great result from the Demo or a Beta tester that would be fine, i'm not a fanboy with cards  ;)

Price isn't a big problem, i'm thinking $300 max though..

Thanks everyone in advanced for taking the time for this :)
I've got nothing.

You will be surprised to see that you will recieve a lot of replies saying that you should wait until the DX10-based hardware comes out [which is next year]. Otherwise, the hardware you purchase now will become outdated in a 6-months and then you wouldn't have enough money to buy the DX10 hardware. Besides, DX10 lets you get the most out of FSX when it comes out.

Wow, here I was thinking that the newer cards already were pre-supporting DX10, i'm sorta embarassed :p The thing that i'm suprised about most is how much graphic cards have dropped in price in two years, but I shouldn't be.

The 6 month layoff is fine with me, I'm really just looking for a general budget i'll need and a good idea for what cards currently can handle it well.

Thanks guys

DX10 is not finished, and almost no infos are available on it. Not even FSX team could do anything, they had to keep with an artist painting to show what DX10 could do to FSX, instead of a screenshot. So I don't expect any hardware maker to be able to buid anything for DX10 yet ;)

X1600XT ;)

X1600XT sucks. It performs like a 6600GT and costs almost double. If you got the money for a X1600XT, get a 7600GT instead.

BTW please tell us if you are using AGP or PCI-E. I suspect 9600XT is AGP (I could be wrong) and I doubt there will be any DX10 AGP cards. Although the price of DX9 cards should drop.

Looking at ATi and nVidia's 5 year roadmaps son't hold your breath for AGP DX10 cards.

Look at the 7600 series. They are the best bang for the buck when it comes to AGP cards.

Avoid the 7600GS though. Performs similar to a 6600GT. For the price of a 7600GS I would get a X800 or 6800XT or spend a little extra and get a 7600GT. I don't think the 7600GT comes in AGP, I could be wrong though.

If I am not mistaken the best AGP card is the 7800GT and it is just under $300.

Thats another reason for waiting. When the directx10 cards comes out direcx9 ones will fall in price, especially the last remaining AGP ones.

Aparently there is a 7900GS in the works, but don't hold your breath.

It's very likely that it's false. I have yet to see any update patch that can help my "other" computer's Geforce 4 MX440 [which only supports DX8] handle DX9.

Microsoft pointed out that they are going to make an update patch for FSX so that FSX can take advantage of DX10 hardware and drivers. It's possible that whoever told you this may have misunderstood this and thought that the patch was for the hardware.
