EDIT:
For any card, if you find it a bit too much and jerky... reduce the following ONLY:

Under Traffic:
Airport Vehicle Density= LOW

Scenery:
Scenery Objects...
Complexity = Very Dense
Autogen = Dense

Mesh Resolution = 5 m
texture Resolution = 30cm

Dont change anything else utill you test those numbers

FSX is very much like FS9... even though there are chnages to the rendering engine, its a load balance that makes it work and look best

Hope that helps

Give it a shot... just use the settings I posted for the x800... then use the reduced settings

If they are still too high, bring the mesh resolution up to 10 and the LOD_RADIUS, under TERRAIN to 3 instead of 3.5

Ohhh... and drop your fame lock to either 18 or 20 on that card

You might be suprised

Worked for me, exellent ;). On mine I decided to turn up LOD radius and turn down the cars. Looks much better.

Hopefully my new vid card (maybe DX10) will be abled to completly max out the water ;)

The Frame rate killer is easily water, I tried with medium shader 2 and it ran like crap.

Its actually in this order of importance..

LOD RADIUS = because it controlls all of the items below it... you must have this balanced FIRST with the other items as high as they can go, then start to back off the items, starting with water BUT you want to have at least some good reflection so 4 is the lowest you can go... If your not running a dual procesor or SLI, LOD RADIUS needs to be based on MEDIUM to Medium-High and Weather on High, not Ultra.

The order of reduction is...

WATER
AIRPORT and CAR EXTRAS (not boats, leave em at 50%)
MESH RESOLUTION
AUTOGEN SCENERY
TEXTURE RESOLUTION

and so on

Aircraft Traffic should always remain as I set it

It is also important to run a weather theme with clouds of some type, believe it or not. FE DXT3 super-reduced quality clouds look like awesome 32bit monsters in FSX. If you use FE, you can select the cloud set, set it for reduced quality AND DXt3, then install them into FS9,,, go to the FS9 texture folder and tranfser ALL the cloud textures to the FSX texture folder. Clouds in FSX do not render as much of a hit as they do in FS9 however every little bit helps if you dont have a powerful system.

after three months of messin with FSX if I see a stutter I immediantly know exactly which slider needs a shave.

Its the configuration file for the FSX demo program... It presets your FSX demo to settings I know should work fairly well for both visuals and performance.
