Flirting with disaster?

Postby hhomebrewer » Sat Aug 13, 2011 11:58 pm

I have FS9 installed on a retired computer. I have it all dolled-up with lots of airplanes. The installation I have on this computer is nowhere near as fancy. Is it possible for me to copy all the Aircraft, Gauges and Effects folders from the old machine into FS9 on this computer? I think it is if I name the old folders something like AircraftCOPY, et cetera, and drop them into the installation on my "using it" computer. I then change the names of the folders in the "using it" computer to something like AircraftDEF, then change the COPY folders back to their original names. I think FS will look for the names it knows, and ignore the DEF copies. Is this reasoning sound? Or am I flirting with disaster?

I think your adding a couple steps.

Rename the folders on this computer first to aircraft_old.

Then copy your aircraft folder from your retired computer into this computer, no need to rename it.

Do the same with gauges and effects.

The only potential problem I see could come from any payware you might have that writes to the registry when you do a proper install.

Obviously, this computer will not have those registries keys, so you may need to do a proper install.

Other than that it should work OK.

cheers,
Joe

[color=#003300]Since your larger Aircraft folder is on your old computer, I'd basically concur with JoBee. As he states, there may arise a registry error.

I do have some payware on the retired computer. I have that Wings of Power add-on, which has a really nice B-17 and B-29 in it. I like your idea of renaming the folders on the "using it" computer-- saves a step that could result in confusion. I'm easily confused. Maybe I can delete the payware planes, and put them back in after the transfer. Your thoughts?

4. A less taxing method is to make a new "Aircraft" folder, open it and the old folder, then copy and paste five to ten aircraft at a time; You can start up the program each time and even check for any problem aircraft
If you use this method, you need only transfer aircraft of preference, leaving others for a later transfer. You may want to put the default aircraft in first; again, there should be no problem at this point but I suggest starting up the program to make sure it plays properly. By adding aircraft a few at a time and starting the program after each transfer may take longer but it's easier to single out any problem related to a particular aircraft.

When did this new look come about? I am happy to see that I have not lost my account or my post count. That happened the last time the site took on a new look. I see I am a God Member. That misspelling occurred the last time, too...

A few days ago. It's a YaBB update and still being worked on. So if you notice anything missing or awry, please have patience, the fat lady has yet to sing.

If God intended aircraft engines to have horizontally opposed engines, Pratt and Whitney would have made them that way.
