SRTM vs FSGlobal 2008

Postby stevehookem » Mon Nov 16, 2009 1:21 pm

Would SRTM be comparable to FSGlobal 2008? That is, do they do the same thing?

I thought that they were both mesh add-ons but I read somewhere (can't find it now of course) that they are used together. That can't be right.

Has anyone tried them both? If so, which is better and what are the differences? I know one is free. Don't factor in the cost.

Not quite sure what you're referring to by 'SRTM'?? As far as I know there is no FS add-on by that name.

SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission) refers to (one of) the data sources used to 'build' terrain mesh add-ons. FSGlobal uses the SRTM data.

From FSGlobal 2008 product page:
FS Global 2008 is an all new product using the very latest SRTM data (released by NASA in late 2006) plus additional data from various sources

At that time [1909] the chief engineer was almost always the chief test pilot as well. That had the fortunate result of eliminating poor engineering early in aviation.

I think that you mean this with SRTM:

FSGlobal is much bigger. It's resolution is better but you need to have the hard drive space to store it (6 dvd's compared to 2 for SRTM). SRTM can be downloaded just for the parts of the world that you most fly in, FSGlobal is well, global.

Crash ;) (using the free one since it's release)

The free SRTM World Mesh available at this site:

Just wondering if it looks the same as FSGlobal 2008.

As Crash mentioned, the SRTM Mesh can be downloaded for just the areas you are interested in, which I used to do, but having to download the whole World SRTM mesh on 56k Dial-up at the time would have taken forever!... :o...
...so I purchased FS Global for FS 2004 on DVD's which did the (same) job in a fraction of the time!.... :)...!

...and I have the back-up DVD's in the event of a Computer Crash!

Paul....G-BPLF...FS 2004....FS Navigator... :)...!
