Multi Monitor and FS9

Postby stevehookem » Tue Aug 11, 2009 7:22 am

Does anyone use multi monitors with FS 9?  I have my main monitor on a GTX 285 and two small monitors (one is a touchscreen for FMC) on a 9400GT.

When dragging panels to the other monitors, FS9 will crash. This never happened with FSX.

Please help if you can!

What resolution are you running FS9 at? That'd be a good place to start.
Nice idea with the touchscreen FMC, btw.  8-)

It worked PERFECTLY in FSX. It is a Liliput 10" monitor and is really nice and responsive.

I use a BenQ projector with my cockpit. The resolution is 1024 x 768 on the projector and the two other monitors as well.

Hmm, interesting. 1024x768 should be no problem. Have you tried switching any of the monitors to the GTX 285 (eg, running the two mains on the GTX and the touchscreen on the 9400GT)?
Also, in general, FS X is much more friendly to multiple monitor setups than is FS9...

I've tried every combination. I had the projector and touchscreen on the GTX 285. Didn't work. I moved the touchscreen and 15" monitor to the 9400GT and only the projector on the GTX 285. Didn't work either.

Shoot....

Steve, I don't know much about this, but maybe having two different types of video cards is the problem? If you had another GTX 285 or 9400GT, that way you'd be using the same video card... just a thought

Are you running all of this off of the one tower?

I know John and a few others split the duty between several machines and then link them all using WideFS. They'll use their most powerful computer to run FS and then slave the other less powerful machines to it with WideFS to run the gauges and other systems.

I still think it's some kind of graphical overload from the FMC somehow.

I don't suppose you have a spare computer sitting around you could run that FMC on separate from the rest of the system do you?

With the FMC running on its own system and linked to your pit with WideFS, it shouldn't ever crash the sim on you. It may shut down the FMC if that's what's wrong though, but at least it won't ruin your flight totally.

I use my i7 computer to run the FS, another slower computer to run my Ellie Sytems avionics--ND, PFD, EADI and Standby. However, the FMC and overhead panels are from within FS9.

Is there a stand alone FMC/Overhead that I could put on the network computer? That would be perfect! I would move the 9400GT card to that machine.

I see that your problem still continues.
Well i tell you again that im ot very familiar with multi screens.
But if i was on your skin, i would try to set all of them for the same resolution and frequencie. Then work my way up.
I guess hardware, problems ......mmm only if, and its an idea, they are using diferent drivers, or resolutions.we know that there is a great diference between performance on those 2 video cards. But any way i would launch, the elimination process.I know you are fighting with this for a long time, but just try.If it works on FSX, maybe its a metter of configuration, for FS9.Try to disable AAS and all that on the FS, try diferent resolutions ( but all with the same one), and i guess thats what "creates" the problem, maybe your small 10" is messing up all, like you said on last posts.Diferent resolutions and frequencies might be your problem, and check drivers too.
Keep us posted, i hope it helped.

Im running FS9 on a HD 4850X2. So i have 4 exits from display's. Most of the times im running it on 2. Sometimes on 4. When switching windows between screens it will partially lockup and only update the screen a few times. Maybe its trying to update on your system but cant and therefore crashes. Do you pause the sim when creating new views?

Can I pause the sim and still undock panels and move them to the other monitors? I haven't tried that.

OK!! Cautiously optimistic here! I paused the sim and was able to drag the overhead and FMC to my other monitors in Level-D, Captain Sim and PMDG!

It was a quick test this morning but that may be the trick! And it would explain why it works sometimes and not others. I don't even think about being in the pause mode when setting up some planes and flights.
